New Buggie has a weird beak

My kid got two buggies from petco yesterday. One of the buggie has a straight beak vs normal curvy beak towards her neck. It also has some bump on the edge of the beak. Is that a gene defect or some virus? I do not want to have a sick bird and later the kid will be so sad if sth happens. Here is a pic. Thanks!

Return to Petco with the Bird and exchange the Buggie.

The bumps on the beak are leftover spinach. I just clean them. So you think the straight beak is not a healthy sign? My kid insists on keeping the bird even I told her that it might be a gene defect. She said the biggie would be killed if we return to Petco if this is a real gene defect. :orange::34:

Maybe a pic without the spinach?

(Although really I think it's too late to prevent kid-sadness, sounds like she already loves & wants to care for this little birdie. You might need to balance your desire to return birdie, against your possible kid-reputation as a hard-hearted Meanie. )

Thanks for all the great advice. *I am happy to see people with loving hearts. I just updated with two clean pictures. *The beak is curving outward and towards the right. *My kid told me that I can trim it but I am going to find a vet to do it. Two vets near me are all closed due to the epidemic. *There is one vet 1 hour away but he is suggesting I exchange for a new one.* *I also*called Petco today and they just said they are not sure what is wrong. *They are reluctant to do an exchange due to the*virus.* It makes me really worried that they might just kill it. *As long as it is not bird mites or sth contagious for the other bird, I am willing to take the bird even it is gene-related. *It is a lovely creature for my kid. *She even refuses to get a dog.* *Thanks for all the great advices!

That is exactly what I think. I do not want my kid to feel a bird is a commodity. All lives are priceless even they have defects.

Sounds like your kid already knows that, since they don’t want to return the bird. You’ve done well with them.

Yeah, she spends all day researching on the internet. I will try to get the bird to a vet to see if they can trim the beak and check if it is a liver problem or not. But the bird and my kid are extremely happy. Just one more compliant, I should listen to my friend and go to a local breeder not Petco.

Obviously it will take a vet to diagnose whether the issue is caused by liver damage or etc. However it is quite possible it might be only some damage that was caused in the nest or something. This is somethiong that can happen fairly easily. It the beak is malformed due to some physical cause (ie damage or pressure to the beak), then careful trimming--indeed, by a vet-- possibly over a few months' time, can restore it with no problem.

Clearly it's eating okay if that was its spinach. So it's up to you whether to go to the trouble of vet visits, etc. Also, again if the cause was external-physical, then delaying the start of the beak-trimming treatment should not hinder the results. IF the budgie ca survive like that - and it Looks survivable; looks like probably Not causing him too much distress - then correcting the beak does not Have be an Urgent-Emergency situation.

Regarding your Petco. (1) They sold you a damaged budgie. IF IF you were actually determined to return it, the current situation may preclude change-of-mind returns but Not defective-merchandise returns. (Although you might have to escalate to a manager or even Corporate.) But (2) your daughter is likely correct about the results to this intelligent beautiful creature IF you return it. Especially due to the current situation, I expect that IF returned as defective it probably canNot be re-sold.

ps I advise youall to make good use of their babyhood. Work on switching them to a healthy pellet. (IF you can. Mine resisted too strongly for a really long time.) If your daughter hasn't already, have her read or watch youtube videos on best ways to tame budgies. They will have come from the Petco as non-tame most likely, and so will take work and patience to tame them, but this is a really good time to start. While they are still cute little long-tailed baby-ovals with their all-black eyes. :)

Thanks for the great advice. As you all said, I want to make sure we can take good care of the birds. My kid is reading all articles and videos and making good notes. I already get mineral blocks and pellets instead of seeds. Once the vet is reopened and I will bring these two little birds for a check up. Hopefully this virus things will be gone soon....

Yes, you are right. I already decided to keep both birds and hopefully check with a vet once it is opened. I will go to a local breeder next time once we are comfortable with these two birds.

Just really bad news. The yellow bird is paralyzed somehow. She was pretty active this morning. We fed her two sliced spinach leaves and some pellets. I was preparing dinner and my daughter told me the yellow bird is on the bottom of the cage. I immediately put her in a travel cage I just bought and cleaned today. All vets are closed even a 1.5 hour away one. I put her in a cotton shirt to keep her warm. Any advice that we can keep her till the vet reopened? Poor bird....

The yellow one just passed away... Really sad.. I called the vet and no answers since it is too late. I was trying to feed some water with dropper and her body is not warm as normal. I covered her with towel and does not help at all. I am going to take the one to vet on Monday morning.

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
I am so sorry...I know this is going to sound harsh, but rinse her with water and put her in the fridge in a bag...DO NOT FREEZE..Honestly, you don't even have to rinse if you don't want to..that is just what my vet suggests.
Preserving the body will allow them to determine the cause of death and that is important in a multi-bird home..

Again, so so so sorry :(

There are asymptomatic viruses that can be shed and transmitted by seemingly healthy birds, so you really need to know what caused the death if you want another bird in the future (I know that is harsh and miserable..but it is the truth).
