I guess the title says it all.

What kind would you recommend?

Shoot, while we are at it what bird seed do you feed them and what veggies/fruit?
Anything else?

Thanks!! :)

Only do vitamins if an avian vet has instructed you to do so (an avian vet who ran tests etc to see if they are deficient).

You want to be giving them a mix of seeds and pellets, as well as vegetables and some fruit (small amount). The bird food already had vitamins added to it in 90% of cases, so unless there is s specific reason/deficiency, you don't want to accidentally double up and overdose them (certain vitamins can be toxic in excess).

Also, avoid using any that are added to the water because this increases bacterial growth and can dissuade birds from drinking properly. Plus, it's impossible to know how much they are ingesting when you do it that way.

I do sometimes give Noodles Nekton-S vitamins because she doesn't eat her pellets as well as she should and the seeds I give her (moderation---she came to me as an addict) do not contain any added vitamins...But you have to be super careful because the directions are for adding to massive batches of food, and so even the vet read them and was confused.

Anecdotally, I believe that probiotics can be beneficial--lots of people have luck with them...BUT- my CAV said, while they will not generally cause harm (unless given in excess or cut off cold-turkey) the probiotics like Bene-Bac (which I do give Noodles daily) do little good. I still give them...but he said that each species of bird has it's own flora and that birds and lizards etc do not share the same flora...so a product marketed towards a wide variety of animals is silly, because the flora would be so different-- according to him, even ones marketed to a wide variety of bird species would be silly (due to the significant variations there)...
He said they are working on a conure strain somewhere in the US, but that they have to wait for healthy bird to die in order to basically culture that flora..It's way more complicated than I ever would have guessed, but he says it's sort of pointless....Nevertheless, I give her powdered Benbac (in the tub with a parrot and iguana on it lol) in some plain oatmeal each day...and sometimes, Nekton S.

He said even though he doesn't think there is much purpose in giving the bene-bac, that if I were to ever stop giving it, I would still need to wean her off because their systems are so sensitive to dietary changes.

Truly great advise above...

CAV care is strongly recommended as the foundation of providing vitamins and/or probiotics. We work only with older Amazons and it is rare that they need such products. We full spectrum blood test every 15 month when healthy and more often ill. As stated above, it is easy to overdose Parrots.
