Cage Tricks!

Hi Everyone,

I am having to turn to the greater internet for advice.

My daughter has a budgie and she adores her bird. She has worked very hard to bond with her bird and they are now very cute and comfortable together.

We have 2 problems thought.

Problem 1. For some reason birdie is scared of her finger, which has stalled finger training. Anytime my daughter takes her tank close budgie gets aggressive and bites. But birdie is comfortable perching on her glasses, sitting on her head, shoulders and snuggling face to face. We have a dowel that we were using for training. She push the dowel into birdies chest and say "step up" until birdie was comfortable with that. Then she started moving her hand closer on the dowel slowly over weeks. As soon as her hand is close enough budgie bites.

Problem 2.
She is trained well to "step up" onto a dowel which my daughter uses to put her back in her cage. The smart little birdie has this figured out now. When my daughter goes to put her in her cage she flies to the top of her cage and will keep going on the perch but jumping off. My daughter has been very patient and always rewards her when she is back in her cage. Today it took about 15 minutes to get her back in and my daughter is discouraged.

Can anyone give us some advice? How do we stop the biting and how can we get over this stubborn behaviour?

Hi, welcome to the forums!
It really sounds like you have done great so far!
It’s realky easy for birds to be fearful if hands, they have a hard time understanding that our hands are part of us, and seem to think they are scary claws out to get them...

It can take longer than we think it should to make more progress. If you push the bird to the point if bites, then you are needing to back track... back to wher things worked and no bites happened.. we have to go st their speed and keep working on the trust bond.

As fir the cage return, I had to laugh it’s tge truth! Tge way I work past that , is lots of out back to the cage, but nit locked in and right back out out. Which lots of praise and bribes. And repeat several times in multiple short sessions. So it becomes a positive experience , and they learn that everyi time they go back to the cage doesn’t mean they are going to be locked up. Being out is fun being stuck back in the cage nit fun they learn that quick! So it’s gitta be fun. And when it’s truly time to go back having a special treat waiting inside like a slice of apple that they only get when they are in the cage helps.
Also I don’t know your cage situation, but I know most cafes sold fir budgie are way way to small, and usually only have dowel perches., so if you have a small cage, getting a larger one, with many different oerches tyoe sbd size, mine like very very large oerches that are bigger around than your fingers making the ok symbol to rest on, as well as the smaller ones.

Also maybe you already do offer leafy lettuce greens and veggies to supplement the diet. But if nit yiu should, budgie need them as part of their diet. I offer leafy lettuces clipped to cafe bars they live to nibble them like that, and I use a small glass shallow wide dish to starve other veggies. Birds dint like sticking theirs heads in dark deep dishes, and having veggies spread out even on plate realky seems to improve or get them to try the veggies
