I find I post here way more than I should but, Dee is of course the biggest troublemaker I know of.
So I went out for 3 hours and forgot to put the blanket over Dee's cage, when I was omw home I got a call from my Mum freaking out about Dee's wing/head being stuck between the bars. (He tries to escape when the cover is not on) I've noticed on his right wing it looks crooked/out of place and he is definitely not as good at flying and is flicking/fluttering the right wing. I don't think its broken, and he doesn't seem to be in pain but im not sure if I should be concerned, should I be rushing him to the vet? or should I wait and see how it goes? Other than the wing he is perfectly fine (perching as we speak), (pictures below)

How is Dee today?, Dud he adjust the wing into a normal position?
If your parakeet can get its head out between the bars of the cage you must get a new cage with the right bar space right away. You bird could end up dead, hang its self, cut off circulation to head and break its neck.

The feathers are still in the same place, but he still seems normal I'm mainly just concerned if this will permanently affect his flying? Thanks so much for the response. His flying is still a little dragged but he's not in pain.

Wait..are you covering your bird's cage whenever you leave? That is really unhealthy. They regulate mood, immune health and hormones/behavior based on a light cycle...You need a cage with safe bar spacing, and you need to make sure your bird is totally uncovered except for 10-12 hours each night when sleeping. They should be covered and uncovered according to their sleep cycle and nothing else...excluding when they are in medical shock, in some cases.

I know how tone can come off on the internet, so please know that I didn't say that with an attitude lol! I could see myself reading it that way if I were in your shoes, so I wanted you to know that I wasn't saying it in a snide way.

I pretty recently am out of a job and can't afford one right now, I know it sounds awful that I cant afford my bird but I'm keeping my eye open to find an affordable, safe cage for him. I was told by another bird owner about the "put blanket over cage when you leave" but I really should have looked further into it. Thanks! and trust me ik I hate how people always assume im typin with attitude haha

Covering a bird during the day can seem to work due to their response to light changes and the shock of being covered (they also have terrible night vision) but it will mess with your birds mood and hormones and health, so don't do it--- my fear is, that if this happened the last time you didn't, it could happen again....BUT the problem is, it's a double-edged sword.

I understand-- it's super tough right now with everything going on (heck, they are expensive all the time!). Unfortunately, there is not really a good way to safely fix the cage...If you have any money to spare, we could possibly help you find a safer alternative online...

What are the dimensions of the current cage?

I'm not sure what the cage's dimensions are (I bought it through Kijiji) but I have around 80-100 I can spend on a new cage. He never likes being in his cage so im unsure if I should get him one with massive space but I found This https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07JGMD17C/ref=crt_ewc_img_huc_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2F1IBT9E1NFVJ Cage but am unsure what the correct spacing should look like. This is a photo of my current cage (I cant find it online but this is a picture before I added toys etc)

I'll go look for measuring tape rn haha

story of my life lol! Have you looked at flight cages? They aren't that expensive and you can get some pretty decent ones for not very much.

Let me know when you have the dimensions and I'll try to look. DK what I will find, but it's worth a shot.

If you have the ability to take out loans for school and are in the US, those can include living/rent/clothes/food expenses. You might consider taking out a bit more in the future since you have the bird..I'm not sure how it works in Canada, but I took out loans to cover all of my living expenses because I didn't work during college and so literally all of my money for everything was was from student loans. There is nothing unethical about covering living expenses with them, as many people cannot work and attend full-time classes simultaneously.

If you can measure the spacing on that one-- it would also help (b/c we know it's too wide).

3/4'' spacing between each bar, does the height of the horizontal bar make a difference?

The side of the cage ( not sure if horizontal matters?)

In terms of cage size, you want to go larger than what you had as far as dimensions, and you want more depth/horizontal width than height due to the way they fly.

You also should avoid buying used, as birds with no apparent health issues can spread very dangerous viruses that aren't all "killed" easily (even with cleaners).

1/2 - 1/4 nch or smaller bar spacing for budgies is recommended.

How big is the actual cage? Like I said, you want to go bigger, but it's hard to tell just looking. You also should remove that covering/ cloth or whatever that is on the top of the cage.

You want a much deeper cage if at all possible-- bare minimum (and is 18" and that is still too small)

Math is not my forte either lol/eek--- I hate math

Should I post on the cage forum? I'm going to buy a new one but don't want to spend $100 and end up getting a cage that wont work. I'll looks for a cage with everything you've said in mind. And thank you so much for your help you have no idea lmao

I've gotten cages on Craigslist that have been great. Check for rust. And clean it and clean it again, every inch every bar. Some petstores also have nice used cages to.

I found one im looking at, the wire spacing is 0.4" and 16.25" L x 11.5" W x 22.25" H

The spacing is fairly small but im unsure about the overall size (Not sure if size is good, do I need a larger cage? or is this fine, again my Budgie is always out of his cage.)

:D
