I have a two yr old male Red Rump Parakeet. I was told that you don't hear their beautiful "singing" when you only have a single bird. I don't want to raise babies therefore do not want a female with him. My question is: can I get another MALE Red Rump as a cage mate for him. I was told by a breeder that I could, but have read conflicting statements on this. Does anyone know if two male Red Rumps can happily/peacefully be cage mates?

i'd say be prepared to have 2 cages, just in case they don't get on and if they do then just sell on 2nd cage

but is there singing for the ladies?? if so 2 male may not sing? though i could be very wrong about this

You just never know with any birds. Just like people some get along well and some do not. I would not put a new male bird with your current bird (after quarantine of course) unless you are supervising at first.

I just emailed a breeder asking him about a female, would they breed without a nestbox. He said I'd still end up with having to remove eggs or letting them hatch (there is NO market here for this breed). He then said that I could get him another male, said that would "perk him up". He said the females are usually the aggressive in this breed. I read that it's the males, that you even have to remove young at weaning or the **** will kill them. (and the **** helps feed the babies too!). I'm going to call a breeder today who is about 2 hrs from me. I am headed that way this weekend. I have two BIG flight cages, plus a tall 18x18x36 cockatiel cage. I want to get a handfed baby English budgie as a tame pet bird and eventually have him in the second flight cage. I'm hoping to get Cheeto (red rump) a cage mate for his flight cage. The flight cages are approx 31x20.5x52 on a stand. It's the prevue Hendryx black flight cage from petco.com

I'm sorry! Twice I refered to the male as the term they are called. A hen and ... Evidentally it was looked at as not good. No disrespect meant!

I never said I wasn't going to quarantine. Why am I being posted about "you wouldn't do that to your child"??? I know to quarantine. AFTER the quarantine I want to have them as cage mates. I just want to know if anyone KNOWS if two male Red Rumps can be cagemates peacefully.

I do have two flight cages and a tall cockatiel cage already. A quarantine/adjustment cage is no problem. Plus I'd be getting from a very reputable breeder with EXCELLENT health reviews. I will quarantine.

Oh, I apologize then. I didn't realize that was a signature I thought it was a post as I was talking about adding a cagemate. I am very new to this site. Again, i apologize.

I talked to a local breeder. He said I CAN put another male in with him BUT it won't take long to still only have one. He said they will fight till death. I think I'll try adding a mirror!!!
