I need someone to help me ASAP as I'm probably going to get two more budgies for my flight cage today. The two I have, have pink/purple Ceres. Are they boys or girls? Do I have to have all boys together or can I have girls too. Will they breed w/o nestboxes? If I have mixed sexes and add nestboxes will they all still get along? It's a big flight cage.

Community breeding should only be attempted in an aviary. If you plan on breeding only one pair per cage. Otherwise the females can kill each others eggs and babies. They can even kill the other females! I would also advise you do not breed and parakeet under the age of 1 year. And that you look into breeding before you do it.

Thank you Parrot parent. I prefer NOT to breed. I was just trying to learn about parakeet behavior in a mixed community. I don't plan I'm adding nestboxes. So do I have to have ALL boy birds then? Even without nestboxes? I'm assuming that they would still mate and the females lay eggs even without nest boxes.?? What does a pinkish/purple cere show on sex? I want to be sure that I have two boys b4 adding more.

You can keep the boys and girls together, that is not a problem as long as next boxes are not present. You will notice however that tey might pair off because they like each other but parakeet rarely nest without nesting boxes. the blue cere is a boy. A pink cere means that the parakeet is still young and is it had purple it probably means its maturing and showing signs of being a boy. Also its best to keep even numbers in a flock of parakeets because some will pair off and might attack a lonley parakeet who is looking for attention.

Thank you!! That's what I needed, I'm relieved now! I was worried I'd
End up w a fm in a male group. And end up w trouble. I want to keep the number even. Flight cage is HUGE! Lots of food/water dishes so they can spread out!

Males and females can be kept together! Some females can be aggressive and kills the males! Like what was said they rarely breed without nest boxes but that don't mean they wont try. With all the color variation its hard to tell the sex by coloring of the cere! I tell by the shape of the nostrils. One sex is more oval while the other one is more round. I can't remember which one is which. I haven't bred keets for 10 years....when the females are ready to breed, their cere turns crusty brown. Best to use same shape, same box and position all nest boxes at the same level. They're colony breeders! When they're all the same, the females will rarely be picky and kills the other females' youngsters.
