I was talking to a breeder this morning regarding the intitial set up for a baby conure and she expressed concern about the size of the flight cage I'd planned to get being too big for a baby.

I've heard you should get the biggest cage you can for your budget but she said the baby might be nervous in such a large cage. I really can't afford two cages unless I get some cheapy little one and then upsize to the larger one later on.

Is there anything I can do to make the larger cage seem more homey until baby grows into it? Is it better to have several toys in the cage prior to placing the baby inside or should I leave it mostly bare and add toys later as baby gets more settled in? These are the things I wonder! I want everything to be just right.

I'm not an expert, but I just saw a baby conure (3 months) at petsmart in a GIANT cage, and she seemed really happy. She was all sleepy, cuddlying and preening on a ladder--obviously not too intimidated by the size. In the wild they're probably not too concerned about how big the forest is either. The only thing I could think of is not to place the perches too far apart so she can get around easily.

Do you have any pictures of the new baby? :)

Baby babies should be kept in large aquariums or even one of those giant critter keeper things (they're about $30)

This is just a future baby at the moment. I'm trying to get everything perfect.

I'm not going to get a baby baby. I've decided against the hand feeding thing. I'm just not ready for it yet. So the bird will be weaned and all before I bring it home.

You know, I hadn't really thought about them being in the wild. They probably don't worry too much about the size of the forest.

My baby grey is in a macaw sized cage. I think it is huge for her, and she is quite clumsy. She has fallen a few times, and broken some tail feathers, but she seems OK now. I just lowered the perches and put a towel on the bottom of the cage. Some people remove the grate to when they are young. Conures are pretty athletic little birds, even as babies, so I personally do not think you will have a problem with a flight cage. I think a conure would love that amount of space.

Lucy is still rahter young and she's in a right fair sized cage :) she climbs up and down the bars and hangs from the ceiling lol just make sure the bars are smaller than an inch apart, 1 inch is too far apart for a conure

i wouldn't worry to much. Your baby will be weaned & independent so would be flying around very well by the time he/she comes to live with you. Your cage setup & size wouldn't have any effect on the bird at all. Also bare in mind to have a cage size suitable for the size bird you are getting. So in other words you don't need a Macaw cage for say a GCC.

The one I have in mind is a flight cage for finches and tiels, according to the description. It was the biggest I could find with less than 1 inch bar spacing. Its 5/8 an inch.

36Hx20Dx32W with a stand that makes it a total of 60H so its just 4 inches shorter than me. It also has ladders and platforms about halfway up from the bottom. My Mom says its downright huge but I've got space in my living room so that isn't an issue.

I was looking at a flight cage too :) perhaps the same one! I don't have the room for something so big though... When we relocate to Florida, we're going to have one room just for critter sleeping quarters lol

Sounds like a good size to me for a conure. I do actually use that size cage i have 3 sun conures in it with toys & a happy hut. There is heaps of room for them all.

The place I live in is kind of ridiculously large for just me but its the only place I could find in this little town where pets were allowed, no questions asked. Everywhere else has restrictions like cats only or dogs under 10 lbs or only animals that live in cages.

I've thought about getting a smaller cage just in case I move into a smaller place again but I figure I could just get rid of that chair in the living room and it would be alright. Yeah, I'm that nutty about my pets.

-no parrots yet-
I do have two cats -Riply & Nano bites-
four snakes- china, dip & stick, and Grand Chahee-
I know how you feel, my baby cage is going to be 3 by 4, by 5 feet tall. (maybe bigger, depends on how much I am going to spend) and I dont know what I am getting yet. I have my heart set on a TAG but I know how plans can change.
