Snow & Blue-Budgies
So, my mother and I have come to realize that my sister's budgie's have inadvertently become "our" budgies. Here's an example of our little argument my mom and I had with her last sunday about cleaning the cage. Keep in mind, this happened while I was in the midst of my 4 hour long cleaning session for my birds' cages, playstands, and outside cage. We had them outside to get some fresh air.

Mom: "Rachell, I need you to come down here and clean your birds cage"
Sister: "I have plans, you just don't want me to be able to do anything today, but whatever"
-Sister goes outside, separates pan from cage and changes paper, then puts it back together and walks away.
Mom: "Umm, excuse me..they're water is filled with poop and their perches and toys are covered in it. You need to clean them"
Sister: "I don't care. They're the ones that pooped on them so obviously it doesn't bother them"
-They argue for awhile. My sis decides to clean the perches, and leaves the HUGE cage door open (outside, mind you) with two untame budgies flitting about inside the cage. I am amazed that they didn't both just fly away.

Mind you, this takes approximately 5 minutes to do, while I'm spending half of my day cleaning MY birds stuff.

Now my question is...what cage should we get them. My mom and I don't like their current cage and wanted to get them a new one. I don't have a ton of money to spend, so $70 is my max. I don't really know what budgie's require, so I was wondering if anyone here had suggestions. I was looking at some of the cages at www.demsondpetdepot.com but didn't know which was best. It definitely needs a stand though. We have cats.

Can anyone look at that website and suggest a few? Sorry I can't put pics up of any, this computer sucks worse than the last one I had.

Hi NicoleN,

Sorry to hear these poor little birds are under your sisters (lack of) care. I will post a picture of my budgies cage .... it measures around 27hx18wx18.5d (inches) ... I got it second hand (it looks to be brass or something) and I paid - I think around $45 or less. It is solid and very strong, and no rust or anything nasty like that. I've had three budgies in it at one time and all had plenty of room.

My two cages are almost exactly the same (2 breeding lovebirds in the other) and both are quite roomy. I believe in more room the better.

Just make sure the cages' bars are about 1/2 inch apart, no more - don't want their little heads getting stuck or anything like that. I put the things in my cages that the occupants enjoy so that will vary bird to bird I think. Okay, so here's the picture, hope you find a good cage soon for these babies! ...

Anyways, I will see if i can find any options for you. In my budgie cage I have left an open area in the middle as she likes to fly in there (and hovers like nobodies business).

i love the clean life cages by prevue and you can buy stands -my advice when cage shopping figure out whats important to you - size, easiness to clean, how strong, etc then find the cage or cages that match that the best then google and search till you find it at the cheapest possible price. If you let us know what kinda things you are looking for perhaps we could help searching further.

meghanxx4,

i have a cage almost exactly like the first one you showed and here it only costs around $40 (Canadian) at Petcetera ... it's a common design and if you like it Nicole, then i am sure you can find it for even less than that (if i lived closer to you i'd offer mine as i am not using it nor will i need it in the near future).

also, that second cage is NICE! maybe your mom can cover the extra amount Nicole?

Try and avoid open top cages. They are just bad.

And pet cetera cages are horrible! Cheaply made and usually very tiny. I saw one there that was meant for a COCKATIEL and it wouldn't even hold a budgie.

I have a personal problem with Petcetera - as a corporation they care far more about the bottom line than the animals in their care. They nickel and dime the stores and barely pay livable wages to their staff. I have first hand knowledge of this, and I would never recommend anyone buy any live animal from that chain. Also, not saying anything other than this (about the food) .... check the expire dates really closely.

Okay, I'm finished my rant ... anyone else want this soapbox????

Oh, and yes their cages are flimsy and their large cages are not any good for keeping the big guys especially. pinching the bars towards each other the bars are movable = weak and potentially dangerous.

It's a breeding cage but like i said before they don't have to be used for breeding. They are great since the width is bigger than the height. Perfect cage for 2 budgies.

Yup all that is true. I hardly ever buy stuff from them anymore... i barely even go in there actually.
I got my third budgie from there, it lasted barely 6 months. I was in there a few weeks ago and all the budgies had really short tails... kind of like a parrotlet or a lovebirds tail. Which is a sign of sickness for parakeets.

My sister use to be an employee there at pet cetera. You don't want to know the secrets they got there.

I've bought, 2 hamsters, and a budgie from there and they all lasted under a year and a half long.

Hmm, curious as to why open top cages are bad?

Most open top cages are spring loaded or made really weirdly so that if a bird were t climb the top of the cage or even if you to hang a toy from the top and a the bird put any sort of weight on it the top can fly open and seriously injure your bird. Also There have been various cases of birds that have actually been decapitated basically because of this. I don't think anyone wants to come home and find there fid hanging from the top of the cage.

I just bought an open cage top for my bird!!

It's not spring activated, and it has a way to lock it shut. I'll have to be super extra mega careful. 0.o

I have two wrought iron open top cages that are not spring-loaded. Nor have I seen one that is. Mine lock shut from the upper outside. I've no concern for the safety of my birdies.

I have open top cages that are now wired shut. I have always been very careful in checking that when I used to have it open (held in place with a perch) Bucc managed to pull the perch out, thankfully he was fine, but that was it for me. I think with the larger birds they are able to push one half open, or as Bucc did pull the perch out.

There is a post here somewhere from another board from someone who lost their Grey (I think it was a Grey).
