Cage questions

We just bought a cage from Craigslist, got a really good deal. It is 6 foot tall, 39 inches wide and 29 inches deep for $125.00. It needed paint so we painted it (with bird safe paint). We are going to be getting a Yellow Nape Amazon or a Double Yellow Headed Amazon in a couple of weeks so the paint will have plenty of time to cure. Anyway, I was wondering is that too big? I have always heard bigger is better. Also we are thinking of making our own perches. Are wooden dowls from Lowe's ok? We also have some cement like perches we can use. Also the bird we are getting is about 14 to 16 weeks old just wondered if they should be started off in something smaller? We put our green cheek and quaker in pretty big cages and they did fine (separate cages of course). Any help would be appreciated.

First off that cage is the perfect size, no dowels should not be use except for maybe one of them to be used to get across the cage(dont use more than one and dont use it as a main perch). You can use one cement perch but not as a main perch. Also the ones from lowes are most likely treated and you cannot use any treated wood. I suggest you just make natural wood perches(bird safe) or buy some because dowels aren't good for their feet.
Will your baby be weaned? If not I would suggest you let the breeder finish the weaning. Also ask the breeder how cage mobile your baby is before you get him, that will tell you if you need to start him off in something smaller or not.

That size Cage is perfect.. That is about the size I have for Codie and she went in hers at 12 Weeks old.. They need lots of space.

Concrete perches are good.. I also have 2 different sizes of wooden perches, plus a Rope one and they love Boings

Thanks for the replies. The birds will be ready in about 2 weeks. They said they are down to one hand feeding a day. I will have to check on homemade perches. We have a lot of trees in our yard so I have read you can soak those and use them depending on the wood. We have mainly oak and maple and I don't think I can use those. It is just crazy the prices the pet stores charge for perches, toys, etc. Thanks again for the advice. I just joined this forum yesterday and have already learned a lot.
