Pionus cage size and second hand cage questions

Sponsored Links
A cage has come up for a very good price on craigslist in a town close to me. It is 26" x 38" x 71" with bars which are 1" apart and 6mm thick. It is made of stainless steel by a company called Kings. I think it is this cage: King's Cages - Avian and Pet Bird Cages, Supplies, Food, Toys, Perches, Aviaries, Pluck No More but I'm not totally sure and neither is the seller. I'm tempted because it looks spacious and it's 300 which is about the same as powder-painted cages of a similar size when they're new, but stainless steel will last much better.

So, questions:
- Is this too big for a blue headed pionus (which is the parrot I am hoping to get)? I have marked it out on my floor and it looks huge in comparison to the approximately pionus sized teddy currently sitting in it. Is a new young pionus going to feel lost and vulnerable in there?

- Is 1" bar spacing too big for a blue headed pionus? I have googled this quite a bit and found plenty of conflicting advice on safe bar-gap sizes.

- The seller kept a parrot in this cage for 4 years and that parrot died in this cage. I don't know what the parrot died of and it seems horribly insensitive to ask, but I am concerned that if it died of an infection or something, then the cage might carry bacteria which could be dangerous for my parrot. Are there disinfectants which are parrot safe? I should mention that I'm not actually expecting to get a parrot until next year so I will have plenty of time to wash it post-disinfecting it.

Thank you

Re: Pionus cage size and second hand cage questions

My white capped has a cage that's 28" x 30" x 36" with 3/4" bar spacing. That's the actual interior dimensions. It's probably about 4.5 ft tall with the playtop and everything. That's about My Ecclectus has 1" bar spacing. But King's cages are great. And that is a great deal. I would love to get my pepper a bigger cage at some point but the one he/she has is big enough for now.

Re: Pionus cage size and second hand cage questions

I didn't end up getting this cage.
It turns out that the person selling it (or possibly the person they got it from) had stolen it along with the parrot whose cage it was. I was supposed to collect it tomorrow but the seller was being really weird about telling me their address to collect it from - they suggested that I call them when I was nearly there and they would tell me then or meet them at someone else's house and they would take me back to their house to collect it from there. I thought it sounded really weird so I asked if we could meet at a busy public train station for me to collect it and they refused. I asked a friend who is in the police to come with me because I thought it sounded weird. She also though it sounded like something was off so she looked to see if she could find a stolen cage which matched the description and sure enough there is a report of a stolen parrot and cage which is a stainless steel king's cage with the same wear marks. No sign of the parrot though. I really hope the poor owners manage to find their missing parrot.

That's so sad. I don't know how people can do things like this and sleep at night. I hope they find the parrot.
