Good decorative cages?

We are looking to get a nice decorative cage for our Green Cheek Conure and are having a hard time finding many. The couple that we have found and like are a Kings Cage:

And a Prevue Hendrix (this has 3/4" spacing, but we have found that our conure can't get her head through that size):

Does anyone have any other recommendations or thoughts on these brands/cages?

I will recommend a cage with a flat roof if it don't already have a roof stand.
A flat roof is useful in so many ways. And the bird likes it better too.

Lovely cages, both of them. Quite decorative, too.

I respectfully disagree with Eloy about flat cages on the top. I have 3 cages, 2 of them have the Victorian Top (they are Kings cages), and one has a Dome top. I originally had a cage with a flat top, but my Amazon definetely prefers the dome top over the flat one. More head room, more room for toys.

Hi Rye, welcome to the forum. Good luck on your quest. My only thing I have noticed about my cage is that I wish it was wider rather than taller. Mine is tall and "skinny" and neither of my birds play or go into the bottom half really so it seems like a waste of space. The two brands you have on here I believe are both good brands. Let us know what you find.

i have a flat top..but i would rather have a dome for more room on the inside for toys. but mine also like to go on the top playstand and hang out there all day.. really cant go worng either way. good luck with the search

I'm not a fan of "decorative" cages, since many (not all) have hidden dangers... and I do not like open top cages due to the potential hazard of a bird opening it up from inside the cage (one too many stories about a dead bird... and believe me, one is enough!) or the doors closing down on the bird if the perch gets loose.


Out of the three shown, I prefer the A&E best... but that's IMO! =)

The a&e one looks like it has a bigger door - easier to reach in & clean the inside on that one.

But it's a whole lot more money than the A&E.

I'd personally go with the A&E because Monica is right. The more chachkies on the cage, the more bad things "could" happen.

Yep, that Kings definitely breaks the budget. It should be noted that the A&E is also an open top (though it isn't pictured).

My suggestion then would be to just never open the top - just leave it be, leave it closed.

They are all pretty cages, they really are.

I figured as much. Still, it seems like the best cage out of the three, IMO. There may be some concern about the bar spacing, but beyond that, I think it would be great! A lot of room to spoil a little greeny!!!

JerseyWendy, the story I heard about the death of a bird due to the open top cages came from an owner of a B&G. She had other species, if I recall right... what I do recall was that the cage top was left closed during the day, and when the owner was at work, her beloved B&G figured out how to open up the top doors and he then tried to get out of the cage that way. However, the B&G did not plan things out just right, and instead of escaping, got his neck stuck between the doors of the 'open top' and accidentally strangled himself to death. Imagine the owners horror when she came home to find her B&G dangling from the top of the cage, no life left in him.


It's because of this story that I am adamant that anyone who has an open top cage to make sure there is a secure method of keeping the open top cages securely shut from inquisitive beaks/feet inside the cage. Some have a simple piece of metal, others might have a clasp or lock. Sometimes these aren't good enough, because some birds are smart enough to figure out how to open their own cages from inside.

Lol! But that is a nice cage!

We have the first one for Tinker.....she doesn't even try to open the top....and loves being up there on the perch when we open it.....

It would be very hard for a Bird to be able to open the Top from inside! They have very good bolts on them! I personally have never heard of a Bird dying from one of these Cages!

My Zon can undo knots on ropes and knots on chains, but she has never yet been able to open the bolt on the top of her Cage!

I think the first 2 Cages you have shown are lovely

I've been talking since 2005 how I don't like open top cages and how I wished to never hear of a death caused by them. It wasn't until late 2009 or early 2010 when I heard the first... (might be off on that) and so far, only, tragic death caused by one.

Tried going back to find the post about it, but I can't recall where it was located at... and unfortunately, I frequent so many forums, it's hard to say.


I don't think it was said what kind of cage the macaw was in, but he(?) still managed it. I know that with different brands, there are different locks to keep it close... but birds are smart. The small and medium guys are less likely to figure it out as compared to say a cockatoo or macaw, but open top cages still scare me!

I've even heard of a story of an eclectus that was sitting on the perch that held open the open top, and when he(?) decided to take off flying, he dislodged the perch and caused the doors to come crash down. Thankfully, the bird went up!



All I ask is for people to be cautious! And the same can be said for happy huts or any toys with long ropes of some sort!
