Quaker Cage

I'm looking for suggestions/input on cage sizes/cage recommendations for a quaker parrot. Had I the room, I would go as big as possible. However, I am very limited on where I am going to be able to put this cage.

My research tells me that 18x18x18 is the minimum recommendation. I think the cage my maybe "soon to be" quaker is about that, if maybe a hair bigger. Do I really need to upgrade?

What are the sizes of cages you all have?

I apologize for being vague, I am just terribly uncertain as to what cage size would be best (short of a catch-all of "as big as you can provide"). I'd like for him to be comfortable, but also need it to fit in a tight space.

I know your plight. I live in an RV (5th Wheel) space is very limited. Because i have some nice size pop outs, I do have a spot to place my cage during the winter away from my windows. I have attached a picture so you can see the size I have for my Sennie. She does fine in it. Don't know if a quaker is smaller or larger than a Sennie, but if they are smaller then the 18x18x18 should be fine. Also my Sennie gets a lot of out of cage time. The other thing you might need to consider is the bar spacing 1/2" - 3/4" I wouldnt go any higher. Hope it all works out for you

P.S. I was looking at the quaker, one thing to take into consideration are its tail feathers. Unlike my Sennie, who has short tail feather a Quakers look quite long. You don't want those beautiful tail feathers brushing up against cage walls when turning around, climbing, etc. Just something I would think about.

I had actually been considering the cage you posted a picture of, but was told by a friend with a 'tiel that it's too small. I had to agree after looking at the dimensions. And also, thank you for the observation! I hadn't even though to consider his tail feathers.

I am now considering this:

my cage right now is a hair bigger than the 18x18x18. I don't remember the exact measurements but it's a california cage that I got from neighbor. I figure that we can always upgrade if necasary. What you want to be careful for is the bar spacing and make sure it's not too big or your baby could get injured or killed. Any sturdy cage we found that was larger than what we have now the bar spacing was too big. The spacing we have now is 1/2 an inch wide.

I believe the spacing on the one I posted is 1/2". One of the sites I've been referencing for help said that I should look at bar spacing of 5/8". I think, however, I should be fine with that one cage posted above?

To me, it seems almost comically big. Which is where my indecision comes in.

most sources say the minimum size is 18x18. that is for the most part true. so that or larger is big enough for a quaker.


This part is my personal opinion. if you don't care just skip over I am one of those people that believes "bigger is better". even more so when it comes to my animals. for cooper(my quaker), his cage is a 32x24 cage. much bigger than the 18x18 minimum. this is mainly because he is in it a LOT. don't get me wrong. we definatly take him out, but during the day no1 is home for a while. im at school, parents at work ect. so this gives him a lot of space and a good amount of toys. with an 18x18 I don't think that you can leave them in there all day. they need a LOT more "out time" than if the cage was bigger.

so, overall, yes, that is big enough, just make sure than he gets a good amount of time out of the cage. if possible, I would recommend getting as big as you can go within your limits and bar spacing(recommended is 5/8 max. cooper has 3/4 without problems for over 6 months).

I wouldn't recommend smaller than an HQ/A&E 32" x 21" flight cage. If you want a 'large parrot cage', then I would recommend a 32" x 23" cage. I have both, and the larger cage used to house a quaker in it.

The Prevue cage that you are looking at is also a good choice!

our cage has the bar spacing of 1/2 inch and he is ok with the spacing I was told that was the maximum spacing for the quakers. It was so hard for us to find a decent sized cage with a good bar spacing so this one works for now. I was also told that some birds may feel insecure in a large cage. Our bird has enough room right now and gets lots of out of cage time as well so he doesn't spend much time in there. But he has 3 perches, 4 toys and his food/water dish. and he has plenty of room.

I second watching out for their tails though, unfortunetely ours always sticks his tail out the cage no matter how much room he has. So I know his tail is going to get damaged soon or later.

I say go as big as you can afford though, because like I said at some point we would love to upgrade him once he gets through quarantine and into the bird room. but right now the cage he is in is plenty big enough for him and fits in our overcrowded jail cell of a bedroom (literally my bed takes up the whole room just about I have the bird cage, my bed and a dresser and I'm cramped in tighter than sardines in a can).

I'm probably going to go with the one I linked and will try and make it work. I do not want to rush into too much too soon, though, and so will probably look at moving him into it in a couple of weeks to a month. I want to get him settled in and comfortable first (saying I get him!).

All three of my parrots are each housed in a flight cage with half inch spacing and by the time you add perches and toys they need the space to be able to exercise ,flap their wings, climb around ect. They all use every inch of their cages
