Hey people. Next month I will be getting a princess parrot. Now from what I can tell they are quite chilled out birds, but their size requires a cage of decent size. The thing is, theres very little I can find on specific cage size requirements..

Hi Hofstadter- interesting name (German?) yet you have Cyrillic in signature:) Congratulations on getting a Princess Alexandra parrot, to give it its full name.

We have a Princess, any of the larger cages would do. The linked Jumbo cage is simply enormous, but would suit if you have the space (with multiple birds, we don't:). Pricesses are not big birds (about 20% heavier than a quarrion) but have a fairly big wingspan and a very long tail. Our cage is probably a tad small, in fact, Kermit's tail sometime pokes outside.

Your bird will enjoy lots of toys, our bird is very active, acrobatic and vocal in his cage. My next toy is a swing, I made one but isn't working too well. Kermit plays with his bell a lot, especially the clapper. I'm surprised princesses aren't more popular in the pet trade, they are wonderful birds with heaps of character. They can be quite noisy, Kermit's covered at night but I can still hear him some days from sunrise, as soon as the cover comes off around 8am- he gets REALLY noisy. All good fun though and he copies our other birds' calls and they copy his. We got him by accident, really as we were asked to hand-raise him after clutch-mates died in first hot weather of last spring. He couldn't go into an aviary though as he can't eat seed - he has a deformed beak.

Heh. I'm australian. Hofstadter is shorted from my full online name, Hofstadter's Tortoise, from my favorite book, Godel Escher Bach by Richard Hofstadter. The tortoise is basically the books troll, torturing his friend with mind games. And the russian is from Dostoyevsky, I'm a bit of a russophile.

What do you mean larger cages, are those two not ok?

EDIT: I'm also quite surprised they arent more popular, the pastel color is so attractive.

Have you looked up flight cages. Those are great sized cages with appropriate bar spacing :D

Princess parakeets are beautiful!

Good stuff, I'm into languages/linguisitics/word origins (in English:))

The cages you've linked to look find, plenty big enough. Will your bird be let out for a fly? Our guy comes out daily for a few hours, I worry that he'll get fat as he has a very plump breast, and his diet is on the rich side. Not sure about the "pastel" colours, Kermit's pretty "bright", maybe even more so than the "usual" colours. He may have some genetic issues though, not only the deformed beak but a missing claw, and his chest is slightly lopsided.

I'd be more worried about the princess, than the lovebird. My experience with the latter (peachfaces) is that they can be "leg-biters" which is why we don't have any in our mixed flock. Then again, I saw a whole bunch of peachfaces and 'tiels together in a cage at a bird place in Perth once. Our princess mixes with a budgy, a plumhead and a 'tiel, in their "flight shift". We don't let Kermit out of his cage if the eclectus is out- Kermit is fearless and will get right in the eccy's face- bad move if Alex gets cranky coz he could take Kermit's head off!

I can only speak for our Kermit, but the only bird we have which comes close in curiosity is the lorikeet- and hhe's not allowed inside. Kermit will poke his head into all sorts of places- we have to be careful making tea/coffee/milo as he will stick his head in for a look, and if the water hasn't been added will try the contents. He's especially fond of Milo powder, although my wife chastises me if she sees me letting Kermit have any, due to its (small) chocolate content. If he comes across a small cup, he will pick it up and try to run away with it. A really engaging character:) He definitely has to be in his cage if my wife's cooking- otherwise he'd be checking out each pot...
