I have a cage, that needs a bit of a clean up/repaint(got a few rusty-ish/chipped spots). What type of ''paint'' can I use to recoat this cage with, that would be safe for the birds??? or any way to refinish it,since there is some damaged sections??

To be honest, I have seen too many birds ill with toxic poisoning from painted cages, even the ones that were painted with non-toxic paint, that if my cages start getting in rough shape, I toss them and buy new. I know that wasn't much help. Sorry.

I agree with Riley's mom 100%, get rid of the cage.
It's not worth talking a chance, painting it, thinking of the toxic's in paint.
Another option, if your finances don't' allow a new cage, perhaps you could scrap all the bars, get rid of the chips and repair the damaged sections.
This could take ages, worth a try.
Take care, and that of our feathered friends !!!!

I suspect refinishing a cage with the quality of paint needed might be nearly as expensive as buying a new cage. Companies that make cages work in bulk - refinishing a single cage probably isn't worth it.

But is there any reason it needs to be painted? Might be easier to remove what paint is left.

To remove / stop rust molasses works well. Soak the rusted section in molasses + water for a couple of days, scrub, repeat ....

Thanks everyone. It is a brass metal cage...
I think I can just scrub it up with some plain steel wool and a dremel it,it would be ok.I just wanted to do a ''pretty'' job on it.The rust is pretty minimal,so I will try to molasses trick. It was not really going to be used for hookbills that could eat the paint off,but I think I will refrain from painting it,none the less.If it doesnt clean up well,I will discard it.

I know this post was posted earlier this year but I see that my cage has rust on it. I have only had it a year, is this the round about time frame that a cage lasts without showing signs of rust? I know every cage is different and it depends on environment etc but how long do your cages last in general? The advice was given to soak the parts with molasses and water for a couple of days - might be having a slow moment but how would that be possible if you dont own a second cage to keep your parrot in during that time? Am a little ticked off that the cage would begin to rust so quickly, it was an expensive cage! I dont even know what kind of metal it is - its the standard cage that you buy in petshops with two wings that are held up by a perch at the top and a door that opens to the side with a perch and hook. Do you guys buy cages every year? Any advice would be great :)

hmm so you can just strip the cage down and will the molasses really take rust off?
