So Kiwi's new carrier came today:D He was SUPER intrigued when I was putting it together. I *THOUGHT* I had taken a video, but instead just got pics of him hanging off his cage to see. He was giving his excited whistles and "hellos".

I can't say he loved it and never wanted to come out, but he wasn't scared crapless of it either, which is a good thing. After I ordered it, I did get to thinking about the dark interior possibly reminding him of the cat crate he lived in for at least 5 years (yes you read that right) before we adopted him, and that is obviously a very traumatic memory for him, or at least I would imagine it would be:(. I am happy to see with the design though, it should be relatively simple to reline it in a more comforting color, probably the snuggly blue polka dot flannel I made the little hut he sleeps in out of :) Anyways, he seemed a little unsure, like I said, but not beyond freaked out and I have sat it right next to his play tree (it's pretty much the same height) for him to come down and explore when he's ready. I have 0 skills editing a video, so please excuse it being sideways and my squeaky irritating voice, oh and the messy t-perch as we just had lunch before I assembled the carrier and the mess in the background as I am making toys today:30:

(whatcha got there mommy? This is just a pic of how intrigued he was, not a video)

(This is the video, I think you have to click on the image to make it play)

That carrier is amazing! I bet he is going to really love it with the polka dot flannel:)
He certainly seemed very interested in it and he is going to love taking walks with you in that. It is so roomy!

WELL..... my bad for doubting his interest and whether or not he would like this thing. That did not take any time at all! I guess his inquisitive nature got the better of him:D

We shall see if after his little afternoon nap he would like to go back inside and hang out;)

He just spent about a good hour hanging out on top the carrier and at the bottom of the "door". Then I put a toy in each dish and he zoomed in there and started playing, then preening:D I think he just needs to get acclimated to it, but I bet even at home he will end up liking hanging out in there- kind of like a little man cave (or should I say bird cave ore even a bat cave, he does enjoy hanging upside down:p). Especially after I customize the lining for him to something a little more suitable and flashy;)

This was SUCH a great read, and I enjoyed your video, too. :) What a fantastic carrier! :)

Wait, Kiwi lived in a cat crate for 5 years? Poor Kiwi. :(

I was astonished to see that you were able to put him in the carrier without him freaking out. And what a curious boy he is, it took him no time to explore his new man cave all on his own (after his nap). :D

Yup. I do think he got to come out and all, but he had no cage, just one of those plastic carriers for a cat stuck in a corner. They said he "preferred it", and what little background we got on the first owners, they may have also felt he "preferred" it:( I personally think he "prefers" his roomy cage that is left open all day, and "prefers" even more his play tree or just hanging out with us (if you want MY opinion;)). I think more he did NOT "prefer" the woman and her husband he DID "prefer" did not "prefer" him, so he got the short end of the stick:mad: They did get one thing right, he does like men better, but that doesn't mean he hates me (I put in the effort) or that he deserves to live in a cat crate. Sorry, it's kind of a sore spot with me, I still love my Kiwi even if he took to my husband more. He's an animal who knows no different.

I was 50/50 on whether he'd go in. He does love pillow forts and getting under stuff, but it was a new thing I think a lot of birds would totally freak over. He hung out in it last night for an hour or so and seemed much more comfortable. I think as he gets used to it, he will love it!:p

UPDATE, Day 2 with the carrier:

So Kiwi sat on the edge of his carrier yesterday for a solid hour in the morning while I sorted some tax documents, and happily dropped bits of chewed plastic (from a toy, not the carrier!) on my head and paperwork while whistling and grunting at me. I think the more frustrated I became the more he was mocking me:20:

After the tax appointment, I put him in and zipped it up. I carried him very slowly around the house. My husband followed and watched his reaction, as he was on my back and I couldn't see him. He was unsure at first of the movement, but seemed to grow ok with it (though not overjoyed with it). We gave him a bath outside, though not in the carrier, to cheer him up and make sure he knew how good of a boy he was. He got sleepy after his bath, so I zipped him back in his carrier and let him take his afternoon nap whilst sitting by me on the couch. He spent about 2 hours in there, and then preened himself thoroughly before growing restless and wanting to come help me prep dinner. I think he should be used to the carrier in no time! I'm breaking it down today and re-lining it, so hopefully that makes it a happier place for him to be.

And for everyone who shared their opinion on the fabric thread, I think you will be surprised by how I choose to do this;) It will definitely be personalized just for my boy:D

:DCan you give me some info on the carrier? Where did you find a backpack carrier? Did it come with a perch and the metal dishes? Ahhhh....the ideas....what fun the walks would be with a fid!!!! I am not sold on flight harnesses in this area as there are a lot of hawks, owls and some eagles. But this country town I live in has the cutest pet parade....ducks, geese, cats, dogs and anything else that can walk or be carried :D
