Cage Cleaning

Hi, i recently upgraded my Lovie's bird cage to something bigger. The new cage because of the size is not able to be washed under running water. I wash the cage by wiping down with soap and then Pet Focus. But the cage has a smell to it like dishes have after they are cleaned. The smell started right around when it got really humid. My question is does anyone have any suggestions about a better cleaner/deodorizer that is safe for birds and will leave a clean smell, a better way to clean cage, also does bird food pellets smell more in humidity because they do have that animal food smell.

Thanks,
Mar

You could use soap and hot water.... or vinegar. White or apple cider. Straight or diluted with water.

I suspect that pellets could smell, especially if they get wet.

If the cage is small enough to sit in your shower, what I did when I got Pascal's cage is rolled it into the bathroom(Boyfriend had to take off the door.. ) and turned the shower on, the super-freaking-center-of-the-earth-hotness setting, and let it douse the cage for a while. (We took the fire alarm off the wall for this, because the steam would set it off.) After the cage sat in it's steamy sauna, we went in and attacked it with sponges, then let it rinse again. :)

We had super hot water running for probably 45~ minutes combined(over-kill, I know.) but I STILL get cold patches while taking a 10 minute shower?!? Something isn't right... :p

I have large cages and only one thing works to my satisfaction: Melaleuca's Ecosense line, particularly the Solumel disinfectant. Smells fine, cleans wonderfully, and I don't have to stress about any residue because it is perfectly safe.

I just looked into this because I was curious and was hoping it'd be a nice smelling agent I could use, but a lot of bird forums say it isn't safe because it's similar to Tea Tree Oil, which is extremely poisonous for parrots. How true that is, I'm not sure. But I thought I'd let you know from what I found.

I use Avitech to clean my bird cages with a tub of hot water with a few drops of GSE and a some apple cider vinegar. I spray the areas with the Avitech, then use a jay cloth dipped in the hot water to wipe everything down. I have two cages, one that is 27x21x58" and another that is 36x24x66". It takes me 20 minutes top to do a full clean, and I do it every other day at the very least.

Thanks everyone for the response some really great ideas. I will look into Avitech and the steam cleaner seems interesting.
