How is a cage made cat safe, I want to get budgies the next year, but I can't have them in the same room as my small rodents, so I'm thinking perhaps the living room, how is a cage made cat safe and how does one teach the cats to leave them alone, a spraycan?

I know of some people who hang the cage from the ceiling, keep all cage doors locked with actual locks, but the weakest part of the cage is the slide-out tray. Even if the cage is hanging high cats will jump on the cage and terrify the cage occupants. Many people have given me their birds when they discovered their cats were torturing their birds by swinging from a hanging cage.

The most successful cat/bird owners that I know are the ones who put the caged bird in a room, close the door, and keep it shut when they are not home.

Cats can never be trained to be trusted around small furred or feathered friends. They can learn to be sneaky and wait until your back is turned, but never actually 'safe'.

With smaller birds the main issue is that the cat will go for the bird through the cage then tip it over, releasing the cage/base catches and/or scaring or hurting the bird in the fall.

I am currently looking after my sisters degu's while she is away training- I have their cage secured to the wall (well, fireplace, but close enough) to prevent it bring pulled over and have a lock on my living room door to stop the cats getting in while I'm not there. My big Mac and amazons look after themselves if the cats show an interest, and the door lock is to preserve the cat, not the birds! ;)

Why can they not be in the same room as your rodents? I currently have 3 gerbils, 2 degus, 1 macaw and 2 amazons all sharing a room. My Mac is totally fascinated by the gerbils and degus and just loves watching them :) x

I bought a larger, sturdier cage for my budgies. It is 18x18x 30, so it is large enough the cats can't tip it over. With the see gaurd the cats don't really have access at them from the ground, plus the budgies stay on the top half of the cage anyway. One of the cats would get on the top of the cage, so we put extra bowls etc on top to discourage her.
The cats have pretty much lost interest in the budgies now.

(Excuse the cages in these pics, I hadn't cleaned them yet when my daughter took the pictures).

This is Monkey (old cat, front paws de-clawed) getting a nasty little bite from Trixie. Serves him right. I don't like the idea of the birds touching the cat (bacteria exposure).

Trixie is cage aggressive. Even though Monkey's de-clawed and is a ding-bat, we still must keep a careful eye on him.

Instinctively, he wants to stalk them. Luckily, someone's home all the time, otherwise we lock him away in a separate room if no one is home.

Edit: I guess what I'm saying is that it's near impossible to cat-proof a bird cage, even with a de-clawed cat.

Because I'm also interested in chinchillas and those need silence in the day, my rats also sleep during the day but they don't get angry if one wakes them up (They just yawn and wanna play XD), don't know if birds can catch myco from the rats, but untill I would get any blood tests for parrotfever I wouldn't risk my rodents, unless it can't transfer it to them or they are unaffected by it, I've also heard it might be illegal in Sweden to have them in the same room if it bothers the rodents.
