So I am pretty settled on the Caitec Featherland "Alexandria" 28X44X36 as Kiwi's "forever cage" and plan to have enough saved up to order it at the end of Novemeber (fingers crossed on some extra deals due to the holidays!). It is ridiculously huge for one zon, I know, but what can I say- he's really spoiled!

In the meantime, I want to start some DIY projects for the new cage to make it an awesome birdie playground for him! I may "borrow" these ideas to DIY my own versions out of known safe materials for his mega-roomy cage;)

Parrot supplies climbing ladders ladder swings chew toy tiger cage bars Elevated station peony cockatiels-in Toys from Home & Garden on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group
(I can imagine adding some stainless hooks to hang foraging cups from on a "ladder" like this. How awesome would that be?)

Two hanging wooden ladder hamster parrot toys suspension bridge staircase rings and swing birds activities-in Toys from Home & Garden on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group
Or a suspended foraging platform? Perhaps with a hanging ladder for extra challenge?

bird toy melopsittacus peony xuan feng parrot toys chains sand ladder swing-inToys from Home & Garden on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group
Will definitely be looking into making a "suspension bridge" like this too.

Any other setup ideas for a extra-roomy cage for the size of the bird are welcome:D Kiwi is definitely an active bird and likes challenges, climbing and hanging off stuff, so ideas of those kind of projects would be awesome! Also thinking about using the atrium part of the dome to do some kind of foraging-center, like a little challenge course for him where it takes work and coordination to get the treats. He's too smart, and has already mastered all his "puzzle" foraging toys so physical challenges to forage is up next for him;)

April, Kiwi is going to LOVE it I'm sure! :)

The spaciousness will allow for a nice size swing or boing inside the cage. You'll find there is so much more you can do as far as being creative and what to put in when the cage is big.

What I love to do in all my cages is hang a long length of plastic chain down from the roof of the cage, then at various points along the chain as well as at the bottom end of it, attach toys.
This is a great way to add more toys without taking up more space. Even though that is a spacious cage, it's an especially good idea for smaller cages. This also visually balances it out so that not all of the toys are hanging from the top or foot toys sitting on the very bottom (fills mid range area).

I think you'll have a lot of fun with it!

Don't know if Kiwi is a plastic chain chewer, but Heidi, my patty likes to chew her plastic toys, wooden toys & wooden perches...a couple of years ago I had a 6' chain looped between a couple of cages & Heidi was up there doing her re-design work when all of a sudden she goes flying through the air, holding on to the chain & bounces off one of the cages.....she wasn't hurt, but had a nail/talon caught & started screaming about it.....I think she was also upset at me for laughing at her.....I shortened her chain toy & put it back up, but she hasn't chewed through them again.....

Good luck.....

Kiwi is going to be so happy in his amazing new forever cage. April, you are going to have so much fun setting up Kiwi's new castle! I can't wait to see your talent for interior decorating and toy making in action. Lucky birdie!

I'm so excited to be able to get this for him. I wish I had the money now! Kiwi is such a good boy, living in "tight" quarters for a few years. He deserves a nice big cage, and I think he's ready behaviorally:)

I was just thinking of using stainless chain actually, but if I could find a durable enough plastic that would be really cool! Kiwi isn't a big chewer.

That's a good idea too. I can't use plastic chain as a "functional" piece in Robin's cage. Plastic chain is his FAVORITE chewing toy, and will chew through it in no time! He loves his plastic chains :) It's okay for Raven and Griffin since they don't use it as a toy.
