split cage or no?

Yup me again, the lurker who is still waiting for the right time to bring a parrot home. Definitely looking on getting a pionus as my first, Bronze-wing to be precise.
I was looking at cages still and I cannot decide for the life of me, dome top or playtop...

So I thought what about that split cage I saw a long time ago. AE Split Bird Cage with Divider 42x26 - by BirdsComfort.com from A&E. I would remove the divider and bird would have the entire cage to him/herself. I was wondering what you guys thought about split cages? Any issues with them. Would you buy one or not?

I don't know much about Pionuses (Pioni?) but that is a gorgeous cage!
As for dome vs playtop I'd go with the playtop every time, but I love how this cage has both!
Your plan sounds pretty good to me, but again, I have no experience with split cages. Good luck!

Personally, I think that's one of the "better" design for a cage shaped like that--others have only one door that can make getting things/your birds hard to do.

I don't see why you can't move the divider as long as the spacing isn't too big. But I totally love the combination of the two cages too! And the size seems more than adequate enough for a "couch potato" type of bird.

I had a friend give me a cage exactly like that, but I stand 6'1" and that was the worst of the cages I've ever had to clean.....

Maybe if I was shorter, it might not be as bad, but I gave it away also.....

I have multiple species of conures and a couple of them don't like visitors perching on the tops of their cages, so if you ever decide to get another bird, dome-top cages are almost impossible to prevent visitors on the roof, while with flat-tops you can get a piece of acrylic & lay on the top to prevent toe/foot bites.....

Good luck.....

I've always loved the LOOKS of that style cage. But just like weco said, I look at it and can imagine the horrible time cleaning it. At least that one looks like it has a decent size door, and has 2 doors. I've seen cages that style (different brands) with ONE SMALL door. Not that I like A&E... but that's another story. Also I don't like the divider idea.

So why is it you like my favorite Pionus specie in particular? :) They're not popular, but they do have their cult following. Raven waves 'hi'...

I've been reading all I can on the Pi's and I like them all as a species. I know the Bronze-wing is hard to find but I'm just rather mesmerized by the deep blue color of their plumage and the bright yellow beak, reminds me a lot of the Peregrine Falcon. I love it! I actually contacted a breeder who has two pairs, she encouraged me to stay in touch with her and to ask her anything I wanted if I needed to know anything, even though I'm not /quite/ ready to bring one home.

I really wonder if my local bird store has this cage on display. I didn't notice if they did when I was last there cause I was mostly looking at dome-tops at the time. Maybe have to go back and see if they have it.

I LOVE that cage and plan to get it eventually it's just out of my price range right now. :( if you do get it, I'd like an update on cleaning or any flaws you find. :)

I agree it looks a bit difficult to clean, but other than that it seems fine if it is the style you like. However, I do NOT suggest divided cages for two birds, meaning I only think it is a fine cage because you are going to take the decider out. Adjoining cages are a great way for birds to lose toes.
