This is a cross thread from a board concerning a cage warning.

All my cages have this open top but after Bucc had managed to pull the perch out and one side of it went down with a large bang, they have been closed for good.

I am only posting this as information, something to be aware about.

Well, everyone, I really haven't been posting lately and there's a reason. Sebastian died 2 weeks ago. On August 22. That's the same day my brother was killed 14 years ago, by a drunk driver. Here's what happened, and I can only hope that his death could possibly save a life of another bird.

Everything had been going great, Doobie and Sebastian were bonding like they should and rarely if ever, were separated. They loved each other. If they were apart, they would call to each other non-stop till they could preen each other. Therefore, when I went to work for my 3 hours, I'd put Sebastian in Doobie's cage. Then, when I got home, I'd let everyone out and we'd all play. Well, on that horrible Tues. when I came into my apt., I only got halfway between their cages and my door before I collapsed to my knees and cried.

Doobie's cage top, opens up so you can put a perch in between the bars. I also has a locking mechanism. I never open the top and check the lock at least 20 times a day to make sure it's still locked. I know I checked it that morning when I left. I guess what I didn't consider is the fact that Sebastain is/was an acrobat. Apparantly, he must have become obsessed with the latch and got it to open somehow, then my baby, got his head wedged in between the 2 flaps that open. I came into my house to see Sebastian's head outside the cage and his body hanging, Doobie running back and forth on the bottom of the cage like a mad man.

I've since wired the top shut and I'm trying to come up with some cash for a new cage, I really don't want it in my house anymore, it's the very first thing I see when I come in my door and I can't get the image of my baby out of my head.

I will become more active here soon, I just need to get my life fully functioning first. I really feel like I've lost a child, and the fact that it happened on the anniversary of my brother's death, is just toooooooo much right now.

Its awful isn't it. While a lot of people use these types of cages and never have a problem, I have never opened the top of mine ever since Bucc managed to get the perch off. They are done up so that not even he can get it undone.

We used to have a cage like that for our sun conure we never used it but one day she was playing with the lock and the doors actully flung down. Lucky Kiwi was okay but that night we bought her a new cage wasn't worth taking the chance . Hopefully one day cages will stop being made that way.

I like the basic open door and let bird climb to play top or have him/her step up and place them up there .

That's why Hamlet has a flat-top play top cage ... I had read that somewhere before and when I was looking for a cage I was adamant about it NOT being that style ... That being said, I WILL NEVER BUY A CAGE LIKE THAT TYPE ... it has to be flat-top and 1 door with bird proof locks ... (and what I mean by bird proof locks: you don't give them the key or the combination! ;) )

I wont be throwing out hundreds of dollars in cages, but I dont think I will ever leave the room again without making sure the safety locked is activated.

So so sad... I would never even consider getting a cage like that. I have hear too many horror stories about them. I have a flat top and a dome top. I am ok with play tops except for the fact that the tray below the play part often makes it really dark inside the cage. I would just rather purchase a flat toped cage and get a seperate play area, which I already have. It seems so silly to me that they keep manufacturing cages like that...

I have these sorts of cages but the top is permantly locked shut, Bucc is a great one for opening cage doors, and it scares me silly that he would open the top of the cage. The tops have never been opened and nor will they be. I really can't understand why they keep making cages like these, and yeah have to agree the play top ones do tend to make the cages very dark.

Such a sad story, I can't even begin to image the emotion pain that person must have been going thru....to lost your brother, to a senseless tragdey, and then come home and have the horrible experince of your beloved friend hanging in the cage. My thoughts and prayer for the family.
