Traveling cage, advice needed

Kiwi (amazon) has one of those backpacks and he LOVES it. I use it when he comes out on walks and short trips around town since it's super convenient. I think a destructive bird might be able to rip it up, but Kiwi hasn't bothered his at all (we use it almost daily in the summer).
I personally prefer a real cage though for overnight or any kind of longer than a day trips. We have a small cage (18X18X18) for traveling with Kiwi, though ours I found at a thrift store. They sell similar ones on amazon:

I need it for short car trips. Leo sleeps in the cage we use for traveling. It's a little heavy and awkward to carry. Also I would prefer something that properly attaches to the car seat.
BTW do you ever take your bird to the park? My husband was suggesting letting him fly around a bit. I'm afraid he'll fly off or be attacked by a cat. He's not fully flighted but can glide gracefully. He was clipped 2 months back.

The backpack is awesome for short trips or going out and about (farmers market, stores, flea markets, hiking ext...) since it's lightweight and wears just like a big backpack. I feel it was a very worthwhile investment
Kiwi can't fly at all, and he does come down to the park on a near daily basis with me when the weathers warm (we walk over with him in the backpack). If the park is quiet, he can come out on the picnic table, but if theres children or dogs, he stays in his backpack. I don't trust people to watch their children or dogs closely enough that they won't pose a risk to my bird. I would personally NOT EVER let a bird who "glides" to be unharnessed outdoors either. If you want to let him "out" in the park, harness train him!

OK. I just needed someone to agree with me. Lol so I know I'm not being paranoid. I'm not going to let my baby out without a harness. Even if they are flighted I would still be afraid unless I know they are that well trained.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
I used to take mine to the park all the time, when my daughter was younger. She'd play at the park, and my birds would get outside and play in the tree.

I would love to do this. But I have to potty train him first. My hubby will throw a fit if Leo pooped in his car.
So we're getting a harness soon!!
Even though Leo tends to become clingy like a human child and burrows his head into me when he's feeling nervous about something and doesn't seem like he would fly off I'm not taking any chances.

I just throw a poop towel under the perch, or use a blanket over the seat.
Harness is a good idea.
That would be how the amazon in that picture in my flock behaves... burrows her head in the crook of my elbow, pressed up against my body when nervous about something.

I just sit there scratching her head, and she sucks it up...
She's pretty outgoing. There are very few things that make her nervous.

My wife is assembling one of those Pak-o-bird right now as I am writing this. Her biggest issue is that the "parrot proof" velcro is also apparently "Margy proof" as well. Other than this we have a smaller regular cage we have been using as the travel cage. Yeah, she begs to be let out in the car and most of the time if there are two of us along, we let her.

Well, my wife wandered around with the Bacca in the Pak-a-bird for a while last night and she seems to be OK with it. Occasionally she'll fall off the perch if my wife gets too crazy but she'll sit on the bottom bar and and learned to climb up the inside of the screening to get back to the perch.
Looks like we'll be using this as the travel transport and leave the larger cage we're currently using as a transport in the weekend place so we don't have to keep lugging that monster back and forth (not so bad in the car, but it's a pain to get in and out of the airplane).

If you do, you'll have to share how you like it on the forum. I haven't found issue using it as a backpack most of the time since it's super lightweight. Though it might make it easier to have it in a stroller when we go to the farmers market during the summer (trying to carry my shopping basket while wearing the backpack is pretty cumbersome). When we go to stores, I set it in the shopping cart

ill probably wait a couple months after my hahns arrives before i get one. They allow you to bring your bird in the stores?

I love Kiwi's backpack style travel cage but it was pricy. I found this one on Amazon.com and bought one for Buddy at $22 then recently a second for Venus at $38, that was the cheapest. It collapses, comes with two stainless dishes, but I replaced the dowel perch with natural perches. For the price and size, they are good for short trips. Here is a pic of Buddy in his. He's a GCA, he's a smaller Amazon but he does well with this cage. Venus our Ekkie does well too. I haven't used either cage for a trip over a day.
