Fred - 2(?) y.o. Cockatiel, Ginger - 3 or 4(?) y.o. Cockatiel
I ordered a new cage for Sassy. Her's is a pretty good old cage but I've had to make some "alterations" to it to make it escape proof and to cover a couple bars that were broken/missing. She's been in the same cage that came with her when I got her and I've wanted to update it. I will also be updating Peanut's cage in the near future. So now I need to know what's the best way to introduce them to a new cage? My feeling is that each bird is different. I don't think Sassy will be that difficult to switch her over to the new one, but I think Peanut will be pretty freaked out. Is there a standard protocol...am I making too much of it...should I play it by ear...I just don't know. What are your opinions/idea?

I'm glad that you put this up because I would like to hear everyone else's answers. I had my fids watch me last night while I put the cage together. Jingle asked me "whatcha doing"? Yeti (whose cage it is) watched from the top of her cage door as well. Once I put some toys and perches in it I hope to put Yeti on it but I will let her decide for a couple of days if she wants to go in it. But I'm hoping that by Saturday she will like it better than the one she is currently in because it is almost twice the size. :D

Whenever any of my fids got a new cage, I'd assemble it in front of them, furnish it, plop some of their favorite toys in it - and then just put them in. Never had any issues with either of them.

Ripley (GW) initially was in a smaller cage, and he took to the bigger one with delight.

Sam (Magna) got Ripley's 'old' cage (under 6 months old, lol), no problems.

Hunter got Sam's 'old' cage, she never even flinched. And she's had the most cages out of all of them, and never complained once. :D

Niko (B&G) is still in the same cage that I originally got him, but he sometimes checks out Ripley's cage, too. :54:

Ok..thanks! I don't know why I'm worried about Pea..I don't even know when I'm getting her a new cage yet. She's just so sensitive and sweet...lol. I know the calmer I am the calmer they will be though.

Jingle checked out the new cage last night. Inside and out. Whisper literally jumped from his tree to the cage to start checking it out too. The one bird that the cage is actually for...just looked from afar.

I'm hoping that Yeti gets the idea. I didn't get any toys put in last night but I did rummage through some bags and put three aside to hang in there tonight. But tonight is clean cage night not play with the new cage. :D
