Hi, I'm new and will be getting my Alexandrine once he is weaned and ready to come home. He's only a week or two old right now. DNA sexing is today, and will have the results back soon. For now, we just call him.her Boof, because the breeder says he's got a big head.

Anyway, I have a double stack cage where each cage is 31" H x 30"L x 18" W.

Would a cage this size be appropriate for an Alexandrine parrot to be housed in? One of the cages is currently empty as I just bought a play top cage for my daughter's GCC.

Alternatively I can remove the mid divider between bottom and top cages for a taller cage, or just buy a different cage. I am hoping that the cage size is ok, but just need advice on what would be best for my new baby.

Thankyou,

Very sorry that it has taken so very long to get a response to your question. Sometimes when inquiring about the needs of a specific parrot, placing your Post in that specific Forum will get a faster response.

The larger the cage (depth / width), the longer your Alexandrine will maintain its long tail feathers. Door size is important for you to more easily get stuff in an out of the cage (larger and taller door) and your parrot. You will find it much easier than what you are currently working with.

Thankyou! I have chosen 3 cages and will make a choice sooner to Tao coming home. They are much bigger and wider. I will continue to look at cages until it is the time to buy.

Since Alexandrines have such massive and beautiful tails you will need a much bigger cage in relation to the birds size than for example an eclectus. For an Alexndrine i would recommend that you get a cage that is meant for a bird like an african grey or amazon or larger just so that the birds tail doesn't get damaged. In the meantime it would be fine to keep the bird in a smaller cage until you get a larger one. Anyways hope this helps and also that your bird is a darling when he eventually comes. :D

here's a link to a gcae that could work for an alexandrine

Oh perfect. That is one of the cages in my top 3. Had been looking for play top one too.

I am not a big believer in overly fancy cage tops, since they commonly make the cage taller and more difficult to clean.

Look at cages in which the door is full top to bottom. No spacers, which are commonly used so the manufacturer can use a single door over wide range of cages. Remember, the taller the door the easier it will be for you.

Look at Lani Kai lodge Playtop Large Bird Cage PA5701 32W x 22D x 64H. Should be several competing distributors.
NOTE: Provide for concept only - display of door and play top.
