I wouldn't recommend anything smaller than a 32" w x 21" d cage for a caique. They are busy body birds and need a lot of space!

Also, keep in mind that the access door is very important for you to get in and clean the cage. Look for full height doors.

Bar spacing is 1". That 'might' be a tad bit too far apart for a BHC.

I can't give a review yet as this cage hasn't actually arrived at my home, but I just ordered this one for my new conure. It's 38 inches by 24 inches by 24 inches not including stand or playtop so the dimensions may be a bit small for a caique, but it is a good price if you are looking for affordability. It will be here on Wednesday so I will let you know once I put it together if it looks like it would be comfy for a caique. I have such a hard Time deciding if cages are big enough until I actually set them up!

It says the dimenions are 24 x 22 which I think is too small, even for a conure, especially for a medium or large conure!



I was thinking more along the lines of this cage..... and caiques and sun conures are very similarly sized.

For comparison.... I bought the HQ flight cage for my, then, cherry headed conure, which is slightly larger than both a caique and a sun conure. (around 150-160+ grams)

I had that cage for my Quaker, but was told that it was a little too rickety for a conure beak. As for size, it is actually around the same size as the cage I ordered. You have to realize that its actual cage dimensions without the stand are only 32 inches long by 21 inches deep by 35 inches tall. That makes it wider but also shorter. So as long as it is wide enough for the full breadth of wing spread, 24 inches wide by 22 inches deep by 39 inches tall is not much different in size than the flight cage--the size is simply vertical rather than horizontal which is fine since birds tend to move up and down, as long as it is wide enough for the comfortable spreading of wings. Several people on this forum actually have this cage for their conures, which is why I bought it. I will put it together and make the final decision on the dimensions, but I really think it should be fine. I have seen pictures of medium sized birds inside it, and it seems like a perfectly comfortable size. The downside of that flight cage is the strength of its bars as well as its latching system (which is horrible), and that is the reason I didn't get it again. I DEFINITELY would not recommend it for a conure or a caique--Quaker is as large as I would dare with it and my Quaker Sammy was quite adept at escaping it, but that's just my personal feelings on it.

Here is an image with toys and stuff in it from Amazon to use as an example of how big the cage is--I think it should be fine looking at the cage size compared to that Snuggle Hut. *crosses feathers*

i think i like this cage. would it be okay for a caiques destroying beak and is it big enough ( looks huge in the pictures)?

Puck, I know how big those cages are, and I still think they are too small. I said the smallest I would recommend is a 32 x 21. And yes, I know it's 32 x 21 x 35 without the stand.

The HQ flight cage has approximately 23,520 square inches of space. In comparison, the 24 x 22 has 19,536 square inches of space. And for approximately the same price, the HQ cage is about 17% or so larger.

Parrots actually travel horizontally, not vertically, so a cage that is wider than it is tall is more beneficial than a cage that is taller than it is wide. Think about when a bird flies! Not only that, but a wider cage offers more usable space for placing perches, toys, dishes, etc.


I have also seen people put african greys and cockatoos in these flight cages! (*NOT* that I would EVER recommend that!) I have kept 2 (3?) different species of conures in my HQ flight cage, and have my mitred in half of an A&E double flight cage without issues. I have a 32 x 23 YML dometop that I was using for my mitred, but switched him into the half of the A&E cage to save space and to see if I could get him to get along with one of my other conures better. Not trying to pair them up, just trying to get them to get along better!

friendcaique, that would depend on the bird. Some caiques may do just fine in the flight cages! Others might not! It really varies. Here are some other options.

Hi friend caique, whatever you decide (as with bird cages it really comes down to personal preference on sizes--Monica and I could go back and forth on it all day and the truth is that there is no 100% correct answer) make sure that the bar spacing is 5/8 inch for a caique. Several of the cages you have posted and a couple of the larger versions posted by Monica have one inch bar space which could get their heads stuck!

All the cages I linked to, and mentioned (if there were multiple cages on one page), are of a good size for a caique and with appropriate bar spacing.


friendcaique, the last cage you linked is certainly large enough for a caique, but the bar spacing is inappropriate, since it's too large.

Not a personal attack, Monica, just a note for the OP since some of the larger sizes of cages shown on the pages have larger bar spacing. The comment was meant to be helpful so they don't order a cage that they have to return later by accident. . It's not a contest or a one up, just a sharing of suggestions.

Sorry Puck, but that was mostly for friendcaique, since they mentioned that one of the cages was small!


And you are right, there isn't exactly any 100% correct answer on the correct cage because there are no cages out in the wild! Still, I prefer the thinking of bigger is better, especially if one is going to school (like friendcaique may be doing?), has work, or otherwise which would keep a parrot inside their cage for several hours during the day.

A bigger cage would allow for more enrichment.

What I really like about this cage is the feeder bowl/doors (plus the fact that it has 3 bowls) Mango likes to move around upside down especially on the cage ceiling so I don't know how that would work with a dome top. The playtop is nice but you can of course always put a playstand on top of it. I don't use the seed guard.

I'm shopping for a new cage since ours is just rickety now, I see some rust on the outside, they sharpen their beaks on the bars so it's missing some paint where they did it, I really don't like the color (muddy murky gray) and really want to size up!

It is my pet peeve to see parrots with substantial beak strength in "flight cages". People like them because they're big and they're inexpensive. "Flight cages" are really supposed to be for small birds, even small enough to fly in there, such as finches, canaries, budgies, and up to cockatiel size I'd say is fine. Sure... I know some larger beaked birds have flight cages, but those certain individuals don't bite on the bars. Some birds do bite on bars though. Robin bites his cage at times, and Griffin actually bit his powder coated cage bars to the point that he chipped the paint off in an extensive area in no time, despite having tons of toys. I even covered that area in toys, but he dug under them to get to the bars to chew on. Now he has to have an aluminum cage. Anyway, if he had a flight cage, he'd have made short work of those bars and have bent or broken them. A Caique is larger than a Sun Conure and has a bigger beak too.

Btw... How are your parents feeling about getting a bird? Do they know it's a Caique that you want? Do they want the bird also, or are they not really bird people?

I'll say that I'm not a fan of open top cages (one can always secure them shut!), but either cage would work for a caique, as long as you have room for the cage!
