Looking For New Cage For A Older Quaker

I am looking at getting a new cage for my 25 year old Quaker name Quincy But I'm worried that a new cage will be too stressful on him because the cages I am looking at are will be a big change compared to his current cage. Quincy has only been in one cage of all his 25 years. Quincy's current cage sits on a table that is 29.5 inches tall. His cage is 17.5W x 17D x 25H. So Quincy's cage sits up high. It's a plain stainless steel cage with no playtop or open top. When Quincy is in his cage he spends equal amount of time sitting on the bottom of cage and sitting on one of two perches. His main food cup and water cup are plastic. He is not aggressive with these two plastic cups but he is aggressive with one stainless food bowl.

So the big changes for Quincy will be 1.switching from plastic cups to stainless steel bowls. 2.height of the cage and 3.Quincy will not be able to walk around outside of his cage on the table because the new cage won't be on the table.

I have Petco, Petsmart and two bird stores in my area. I haven't check what the two bird stores have yet.

Here are the following cages I'm looking at. I'm only familiar with the Prevue because I've seen it at the store built.

<A href="http://prevuepet.com/product/87/select-bird-cage-3152c" rel=nofollow target=_blank>prevuepet.com/product/87/select-bird-cage-3152c I like this cage but the playtop tray blocks out light at top of cage. This will be new to Quincy. The cage will be lower than Quincy's old cage.

I don't like how it snaps together, no bolts or screws to hold it together. I'm not sure how sturdy it would because of this. Also, I don't like how you have to screw the knob on door to lock it close. Plus some people made comments about it's made in China.

Do you recommend or have any experiences with any of these cages or do you recommend a different cage that I didn't mention.

Thank you

Hi! I like the second and fourth ones. The second one (Avian Adventures Chiquita Playtop from Petco) looks nice, but one thing was I didn't see much about the powder coating and safety. Regarding the assembly with no bolts or screws, that should be fine. One of our cages was like that and I'm super paranoid with bird stuff but it was totally fine. It just folded open and snapped into place. Then the cart stand below also holds it even more snug. Since it's from Petco, you have the nice ability to return it to a nearby store if you aren't happy with it. :) I think the fourth option (A&E Stainless Steel) is best because it's stainless steel. If that 1/2 inch bar spacing works for your bird, I would go for that one. No worries about powder coats and rust. I'm curious, do you know the price for that one? It's a nice size too! We have a stainless steel cage from Birdcages4Less, which I am very happy with. Of course it's a big transition since he's been in the same cage all his life, but I would start by keeping his new cage next to his current one and put some of his favorite treats and toys in it during his time out around the house and give him time to get used to it. That worked when we transitioned our Green Cheek. Good luck!

You could always use plexi-glass cut to shape on the top so light isn't blocked. :)

Most cages are made in China.... Avian Adventure cages actually have a really good reputation overall, though! And many people *love* how easy these cages are to put together with the lack of screws and bolts!

Many people are a fan of the 32 x 21 flight cages. They are cheap cages though with plastic bases... which is actually the reason I bought my first flight cage! I had an older conure that had seizures, and if he fell, I preferred for him to fall on plastic rather than metal trays.... the downside is that they don't have food doors.

There's a Petco cage that has become pretty popular as well due to it's size and bar spacing, and can sometimes be found for as cheap as $150 brand new.... but again, cheap cage and some people have gotten their cage with dings and dents!

Whatever cage you get, you may want to set the cage up next to your quaker and start decking it out with toys, perches, food, treats, etc! And give him the choice to use the new cage or the old one!
