My BFA:green: came with her old dome top cage. The top opens and I was told that you can put a perch there which I would like to do but I haven't found any that look like they would work. What would be the best way to accomplish this. Should I get a dowel? If so, what diameter is best and how would I secure it to the cage bars? She's been with me a week and hasn't been out of the cage yet. She does like to climb around the top so this seems like it might be the best way to give her some freedom.

Two of my King's cages have that feature. You could contact them and they probably have replacement perches already the right size and notched correctly to fit, the appropriate diameter and safe wood.

I don't really like that feature myself. The birds end up pooping on their toys when up on that. I ended up hanging a large rope orb from the ceiling above the cage and throw a towel over the entire cage when they're on the orb. A towel is easier to clean than a dozen little toys.

I don't use this feature either. I almost let the top close on my Amazons foot. I haven't opened the top since.

I have two dome top cages, I use the fold down balcony door but I keep the dome top locked. If you do open the dome, please make sure the dowel is securely attached on both sides, if the perch slips, the dome can slam closed.

I would attach a perch to the outside of the cage near the door for your shy BFA.

Our door isn't a drop down door plus I want her up high because we have 3 cats. Maybe I can get a cage top perch and fix it on top of the cage keeping it closed. I can put a towel underneath. Think that would work? I hope to get her a cage with a play top eventually.

Do you mean a cage top kind of like this one? Where the top kind of opens up like a draw bridge and the perch goes inbetween?

If yes, I'm not a fan of this feature, myself... have heard of one too many birds (well, more than one) that accidentally killed themselves because of that feature. I prefer better safe than sorry and locking it closed, unless you can figure out a way to keep it open securely without the use of the perch, and have a secure way to keep it closed.

As far as designing some sort of gym on top of the dome top with it closed? Most definitely! :D If you use a towel, make sure your bird doesn't chew on it!

Or you could try designing some sort of hanging gym to go above the cage? I've seen some people use a saucer shaped sled as the bottom to catch any poops, then some chains to come up to a center base for perches, then further up to be hung from the ceiling... or you could design a hanging wooden gym! Or make a "hoop ball" gym!

If you aren't very creative, that's ok, too! You can buy hanging gyms! Or nets! Maybe even a boing? There's a lot of ideas out there!

I bought a nice cage top perch that I can put on top of the closed dome top cage. Now I just have to devise a way to keep her from pooping on everything below. I use contractors' paper in the cage tray and it's quite heavy. I'm thinking I could cut some to fit on the inside of the dome top when she's up there and use paper claps to hold it in place. I'll come up with something!
