Hello all, this is my first post here. This site will be a great resource with all of you knowledgeable folks!

We are preparing for our new buddy (yet unnamed) coming in August, by shopping for a new cage. Amazing how many different cages there are to choose from for the larger Macaws. Balancing cost, design, construction, I think I've got it whittled down to these two after reading many many threads.

Anyone have either one of these for their birds?

My remaining questions - keeping in mind this is for a B&G

Flat top or dome?
Latch adequate for food dishes?
Food dish size good for B&G?

Dome Top for a B&G
He has never been able to dump or remove the dishes. I've had the cage for a year and half now
Deep dishes so yes they are big enough

Welcome to the forums, and many congrats on your upcoming B&G! Exciting times!!! :D

I think both cages would work really well for a B&G. :) Nice and roomy!

It was secure until a few months ago. LOL That big Beak can adjust most anything. I have had to put a latch on the outside

Bar spacing should be fine

Love what your son made Wendy. There is a latch like that on the top of the Door on BB's cage. Save me a few times from him getting out.

I also have the first one for my Greenwing Savannah and have no issues with the latches or door. It's litterly the exact one I bought on Amazon. The bar spacing is the right size for macaws.

Now my greenwing is pretty mellow and doesn't try playing with latches. But do keep in my B&G's can be mischievous little devils. No matter what cage you buy, if they are going to get out, they will find a way. The key is out smarting them. If you do have issues, it's easy enough to further secure the latches. I wouldn't spend the extra money on a cage with fancy latches. ;) Oh, and we love Savannah's cage by the way. It has worked out great!

I myself prefer the dome top as well!

You guys are great. I love the real world feedback.

Wendy, that gravity latch that your son fabricated is just the ticket!!

The Prevue Pet Products Silverado dometop will most likely be the one we go with. It will look much nicer in the room than the Empire cage anyway. They are exactly the same cage aside from the top sections.

The funny part is that Prevue is right here in Chicago and I can't go there and pick one up as they don't sell direct. Hopefully it will survive shipping.

I will immediately add the "Wendy mod" to the food bowl doors!

Once you see how the food bowls set in the cage I don't think you will need anything. NOW the main door yes I would just go ahead and secure that. No need to wait it WILL happen lol

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Macaws find a way, with everything except stainless.

I have a King's Double Macaw cage which is a super heavy duty cage, for my greenwing...

SHE SNAPPED THE HINGES AND TOOK HER DOOR OFF...

SHE ALSO REMOVED HER TREAT CUP DOORS.

NOW YOU CAN'T LOCK ME IN, AND I DON'T HAVE TO GO BACK IN THE CAGE TO EAT...

OH YES, SHE DID. (BUT THE LATCHES WORK GREAT! AND WOULD BE REALLY EFFECTIVE IF THE DOOR WAS STILL ON IT'S HINGES!)

My red fronted, who is smaller than your B&G took her treat cup doors OFF! And has learned to work all the latches.

Zoe, Karen's little BTM can dismantle pretty much ANYTHING!!!

So, the bottom line here, is "macaw proof ISN'T!"

THESE BIRDS HAVE MAD SKILLS...

Same here. Great condition. Watch the parts envelope . They put a small container of paint in there for touch ups. LOL I almost threw mine away

Actually, Zoe (who is only 3 years old) is now being kept in a stainless steel cage. And he figured out how it is put together already...

Red Fronts and Blue Throats are the most mechanical macaws in the world.

Am I lying Karen?!

They are just that smart.

Actually I hand fed a BTM that a friend of mine bought before it had finished abundance weaning, and I finished his feeding. THAT BIRD even though it was still a baby, and "wasn't all there" figured out how the cage latches worked, and learned to navigate the stairs. Within seconds of putting that bird to bed, he was back on my lap... making baby noises and bobbing his head.

These are lap birds. They are amazing companion animals to work with.

This is a life long adventure, and you will quickly find yourself asking the question "how is is possible to love a bird this much?!"

Red fronts are the next in line for mechanical ability...

You'll be happy to know that B&G Macs are way down around 5th in overall mechanical ability.

I actually have a friend whose B&G's favorite bird toy is GET THIS - A SOCKET WRENCH ON A CHAIN. He has his very own pegboard with all sorts of nuts and bolts screwed into it, and a socket wrench on a chain.

He spends his afternoon "out time" unscrewing bolts...

Which puts him way behind a BTM, because... really... A socket wrench?! What do you need that thing for. WATCH ME, IT'S EASY! :11:

Yeah, I am NOT making this up...

So I get it ..... I won't be bored.

I live in a houseful of Psych majors, this is going to be FUN!!! My wife especially, as she is a grade school teacher for special needs kids, with the greatest concentration on Autistism.

All of your stories are getting me even more jacked up for August to get here.

BUT, I will look to all of your collective knowledge for lots of help!!

I am most concerned for those early days of getting the little guy home and laying down that foundation that helps create a good bird.

I ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS, as I am a natural born "knowledge sponge"
