I finally finished my Gun case bird cage. Three weeks ago I bought a Gun Case from a man knowing as soon as I seen it on line I wanted to try to make a gage out of it for my finches, well after blood and tears its done. Before and after pics

Yes you should be very proud of what you have made, it certainly looks the part.

Practicalities, sorry I am a little unsure? How do the birds get any fresh or change of air and will the light not make it very hot in there?

Also, congrats on the transformation!

Based on the above Post, you will likely want to add venting in the top near the front . I would look at Audio furnace as a parts source. They also use (box) fan(s) to bring air in with placement along the back panel near the bottom. A screen cover on the vents ports is a very good idea. If you have an Audio store in your area (thank-you for including a location) they are generally a good source or can recommend a source. Just tell them its for your Audio system, it will save you lots of time not having to explain what the heck you are doing.

Look at replacing the lights with full Spectrum LED. In addition to being very cool (low heat) they will cause your Bird's colours to really POP!

FYI: You may want to consider using a 'water based' sealer on the interior of the case. As a gun case, any sealer would be fine, with birds, may need to upgrade the sealer. It will likely extend your start date a few weeks to allow for full drying, but in the long run, it will be worth the extra effort now.

Beautiful cage!
You could use the white craft paper that comes in rolls on the bottom. At least it wouldn't have the print on it:)

These can become noisy over time and will need cleaning regularly.
Perspex tray, take out wash and return? M Y own??
Moving companies give paper to pack items in - bit like fish and chip paper?

Wood chips not sure. Need to be a wood that is Ok for birds and absolutely no treatment on it. Expect to need to chip up good untreated wood which is wasteful IMO. Wood has a strong smell especially for a smallish area.

I was thinking of using the wood chips I bought when I bought my parakeets from a bird farm for there nest boxes. The lady there told me that was the best for them. im hoping its good for my finches.
OMG I thank every one of you for all the good advice.

You could even get rolls of shipping paper (the brown paper that packages are wrapped in), it is plain and brown so it would be less obvious that it is laying in the bottom of the cage since you are worried about affecting the aesthetics. I would be too :D That is really a nice looking enclosure, and as long as you can work in the suggestions from everyone on how to make it safe for your little ones, it will be spectacular.

I can get a 15' x 3' roll for like $2.50 at Meijer. I just prefer that as opposed to newspaper because it is easier to see poos so I know if something is off.

Nice!
For the floor, consider plastic wallpaper cut to size. Can be layered and is washable.
I see a potential issue with the doors. You said this is for finch? How do you plan on opening the door without a mass exodus?

Great idea on how to repurpose that! Curious if those doors have a wide enough gap for a smaller finch to escape? May just be the angle the photo was taken at, but make sure the doors don't have enough of a gap between them for a bird to escape or a head to get caught. Otherwise looks like a lovely home!

What kind of finches do you plan to get?

Could you even possibly add a discrete door in the side of the case close to food and water so it's easier on you to change dishes? I know I wish I would have done that with the aviary I built for my budgies, and I think finches would be even flightier.
