Goofy (YNA), Oscar (Goffin 'too). Foster bird Betty (RLA). RIP Cookie, 1991-2016 ('tiel), Leo (Sengal), Charlotte (scarlet macaw). Grand-birds: Liam (budgie), Donovan (lovebird), RIP Angelo (budgie)
We generally take the birds with us when we go out of town, and the rest of my flock have their own travel cages and travel toys/perches (yes, we travel with more bird stuff than human stuff). Now that I have Charlotte (formerly Scarlett), I'm going to need to get travel stuff for her as well. The people we got her from used a dog travel crate to take her places, but she hated that on the drive home. She had nothing to grab on to and it was hard to see, so she was pretty traumatized.

I'm hoping some of you guys might have some recommendations for good travel supplies for my newest baby. She's so much bigger than the rest of my flock, and that tail! I want to make sure she's comfortable both while we're phycally driving and while we're at wherever we went (usually my MIL's house, and usually just for a couple days). We're not planning on traveling with her any time soon, but I want to start researching what would be best so I can be prepared when we are ready to take her on outings. Thanks.

Honestly, sounds like the best bet would be a small actual cage. Or, you could try one of the smaller metal dog crates. They are usually collapsable now, are a bit longer to accommodate for the tail, and you could easily attach perches and toys to the bars. PLus, incredibly easy to secure it in the vehicle.

I would recommend a dog crate however with her likely balance issues I'd pad at least of side of the crate with a towel and use larger irregular perches. Also a dog bed or something soft below her I case she DOES lose balance...

My Hans only had two toes on both feet. I know balance issues sadly

I only have small birds at the moment but I use cat carriers as a go to.

However with that powerful beak a good strong wire crate is a good idea.

I was considering a wire crate like the one I used for my old mastiff before he passed away. I'm just not sure I can fit it in my car with all the other bird stuff, but it would be great to set up at my MIL's house. I no longer have the old one, but I could easily get a new one. Maybe I can do something with the current crate (the one she came with is plastic with just a wire front) to give her something to grab on to for the actual travel part, and then transfer her to a wire crate that has perches and stuff in it for the visit itself.

Goofy's travel cage is regular cage intended as a full time cage for a love bird (actually, it's the same model cage MrC and his late wife got when they got their first birds shortly after their wedding in 1976 to house their first birds, which were lovebirds) and the other two just have small travel cages, though I don't like Leo's travel cage. It's the travel cage he came with and it's plastic sided and I hate it. I'm getting him this one: https://www.amazon.com/MidWest-Avia...=1469302128&sr=1-81&keywords=rope+perch+large

I'd love to give Charlotte a similar set up.

This is the travel cage we have for our Macaw and it works great. We add a perch, toy and food/water bowls and he's good to go. I'm not sure what size we have but he has plenty of room for his tail feathers. He hangs from the top and has a ball. We just did a 7 hr trip and we never knew there was a Macaw in the car with us.
Celleti makes a carrier for a Macaw, but with a price tag around $650.00, I think I'll have to pass for now.

I measured ours, its the 30 inch

And the 30 inch is really cheap! That might be a winner.

The wire dog crates are nice to use. I have a smaller travel cage for the chicken when we go places, but I will set up a larger dog crate if she's just going to hang outside with us. The only issue I have with the dog crate is that I had to get pretty big washers to be able to attach perches to the side.

This is what I was thinking would be best after being linked to that one crate. It looks like it'll work great for actual driving, but then we'd need something bigger for while we're at MIL's house. That's pretty much the only place we go.

And I'm amused you call yours the chicken too. We've been calling Charlotte the Wonder Chicken, which somehow got changed to Red Headed Wonder Chicken, though my oldest calls her Chicken Dinner. Of course, that kid has given all the birds food names. The senegal is chicken nugget, the amazon is chicken patty and the cockatiel is Chicken Bites.
