How do the Pak-o-bird travel bags work? Good/Bad?

The look pretty nice on the website(s) but they aren't cheap.

Any problem with boarding a plane with a bird? I wonder what the largest size would be that would be allowed in the airline cabin. Probably on your lap of course.

Traveling with a Macaw...

Any experienced travelers?

I have owned the medium size for my amazon for several years. He loves it and we use it all the time for walks, drives, on public transit, day trips etc... I would personally find the pak-o-bird a bit small for more than an overnight trip unless it was some special/rare circumstance.

I have never flow with him before and I'm pretty certain in the US, except for service animals, pets flying in the cabin have to be stowed under the seat in a carrier small enough to fit under the seat for the whole flight. I know our pak-o-bird wouldn't fit that bill, but I have seen they make airline ones. Still, I think any of the Big Macs would simply be too big and have too long of tails. I would be sure to contact airlines to learn about requirements before investing in any airline-specific carrier because your bird may be too large to ride in the cabin with you. If you just want a nice carrier for taking your bird out and about safely, I can't say enough good things about the pak-o-bird.

Pak-o-bird does make one large enough with a matching $ tag too.

I'd think you'd have to build up from short trips to be able to have them happy while in the backpack for anything beyond the simple transports. But they look like a great bag to be able to bring a friend on any trips.

Question I'd have is what should the spool/spindle/perch size be? Largest is 1 3/4 inches

I have a Pack'o'bird for Ollie and a Birdie Gogo and also the airline approved carrier from the same makers. I'm going on a flight with Ollie in about a week and the airline told me it HAD to fit under the seat with no exceptions and the original Pack'o'bird does not so we bought the airline one to be safe. They are expensive but we use it all the time. In fact I took Ollie with me in his Birdie Gogo to my therapist office and it was great.

How do you like the Birdie Gogo? How is it size wise compared to your standard POB (less roomy for Ollie or similar dimensions)? I don't think they make one yet in amazon size, but I like the look of them- a bit more streamlined design. Kiwi's POB is bigger around than I am and almost as long as my entire torso. Even though it weighs nothing, I look like a turtle carrying it around:eek::rolleyes::22:. Hubby doesn't look quite so ridiculous carrying it but mostly refuses since Kiwi is technically my bird/my little PITA to deal with:p

I have seen the macaw ones online. They are big to accommodate those tails! But I don't think they are airline-approved. Good for other excursions though. IMO, the cost of ours was worth the experiences it's allowed our bird to have. He really does love coming out with us and the POB and the construction/attention to detail reflects the price of the backpack. The issue I have with using it for more than a overnight trip would be it is not very roomy inside and there is not really options for larger parrots to buy one big enough they could open their wings or do much of anything besides turn around and scoot a couple inches on either side of the center. It may be even less wiggle room for a macaw sized one. As for perch diameter, I'd contact Celltei. They do a lot of custom and could likely come up with a solution for a perch if you feel your bird needs wider than standard:) It honestly wouldn't be that hard to DIY a bigger perch either.

If your bird is used to a carrier, acclimation is pretty straightforward. I started out walking my bird around the house, then down the street and moved on to bigger and longer walks//hikes/trips in his POB. He was already well used to car travel by the time we got one and he's like kid on Christmas level excited about taking the bus or train:rolleyes: If your bird isn't used to car travel or other means of transport, you'd have to acclimate them to that too.
