Hello everyone :)

I'm hoping someone could help me

I'm basically in a predicament so just wanted some advice from fellow bird enthusiasts on which is best for my 2 lovebirds.

Today i purchased a huge cage for them off gumtree for a bargain price ( a liberta angel cage > this one Angel Parrot Cage with Play Gym Top ) Me and my husband scrubbed disinfected the entire cage put all the toys and perches we had in, as we was about to let one of out lovies in we suddenly realised the spacing was too big its 1" and our very smaller cages are 1/2" :34:

as the spacing is too wide we are worried that they could get their heads stuck possible hurting themselves or worse, So would it be okay to modify the cage i.e solder wire into the space to make it 1/2" around the entire cage which we both are capable of doing OR would it better to purchase a brand new cage for safety reasons.

many Thanks to anyone who can help us

It's probably going to be safer to go with a new cage.
I'm interested in the replies though... I have a massive cage with 1" bar spacing outside, and have often thought about renovating it for the ringnecks.

:( i mean if its safer for the birds il sell it and get another one, i had my heart set on getting them a massive cage and finally found one for the best price i have ever seen just the spacing was off and didnt realise untill we got it back and cleaned it [emoji22]

My husband is very excited if its possible to modify the cage as he loves diy
Heres hoping my cage can be saved im sure they would love their mansion especially when bluey gets better

I was going to suggest putting on something around the exterior (like chicken wire but closer together) but after looking at the cage I doubt it would work.
to many doors and irregular shape.

Soldering/welding addition bars would be a major effort. how would you paint the extra bars ? How would you keep them from developing rust?

If it was me I think I would try to wait for something better to come along, Craig's list or one of those neighborhood sell/trade apps/

Just my opinion.

Even if the bar spacing was not a problem, I would dump that Cage, ASAP! It is going to be a true pain to clean!!!

Also getting the birds in and out is also going to be a pain!!

Yes my husband thought of chicken wire as we also have chickens but it would be a bit awkward & not stop them from sticking their heads through if its on the outside.

We both love diy stuff so it wouldn't really bother us that it would be a massive project
For painting the bars i found this https://www.ecospaints.net/browse/pet-products/ it is a bit expensive but havent found much else that i would actually trust.
As for the rust im not exactly sure as on every cage i have had, iv never encountered rust at all but im sure there is something out there a Google search away

I have looked on most places for cages and well the massive ones that they deserve are extremely expensive & spacing is totally wrong like this one which i realised too late

This cage was like a dream come true for the price i got it probally why i didn't realise it was the wrong spacing [emoji85]

It is a nice cage, but it's for a much bigger bird. I'm sure you could even possibly make a little profit by reselling. I bought both of my cages used, and I might actually try selling one and going a bit bigger. If you watch long enough, you can definitely continue to find good deals. Sometimes trying to find workarounds can end up with an injury to a bird down the line too.

I'd go for a new one. I'd recommend the Liberta Chile one from the website you linked, naturally try to find a second hand one. I'm actually thinking of buying that cage myself. It's so big and the bar space is tiny. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a bigger one with the same bar spacing.

Thanks i checked out the cage you linked its very nice but the problem with that one is that i can't put a separator in that one,
As basically the 2 reasons i got the cage i have now were it is massive & i can put a seperator in the middle if she gets aggressive again and they would still have ample space (currently they are in seperate cages as the female gets too over aggressive and attacks the male to the point of once nearly killing him so they can't be left alone in a cage by themselves)
Why i wanted one massive cage that can be seperated but still have plenty of space.

I havent been able to find such a cage except the wrong one i currently have [emoji85]

Yea it is an amazing cage

I did want a cage that was massive for them but i could seperate them when meeded as i want them to have as much space as possible & I would rather have one big cage than 2 smaller ones, so when bluey gets better he would have a nice suprise of a mansion but its not working out so far [emoji85]

Im going to keep looking if something else pops up and email places but for the type of cage i need im highly doubtful tbh

If she's like that then 2 smaller cages side by side is the way to go If they aren't bonded and she has attacked him that badly in the past then the odds of them bonding to the point of being safe in a cage together are low at best

Yea currently they are in seperate cages next to eachother when i can't let them out, night time or when im not here,
When i let them out together supervised ofcourse they get along extremely well preening eachother feeding eachother following eachother around sleep next to eachother etc etc its just sometimes she pecks at his feet which is what she done last time and he lost alot of blood as she bit him so hard, i don't want them in one big cage without the ability to put a seperator in incase she has one of her psycho moments

So thats why i wanted one massive cage like the one i have so i can put a seperator in the middle with enough space for both of them on either side but with the right spacing but for the life of me i cannot find one that exact shape & size

the thing is you're looking for a divider for a psycho moment. Getting a divider in during a moment like that just isn't really possible as they would need separating. Also what happens when you're not there and she decides to go for it?

IMO it'll be better to keep them in the situation they're in now, as close neighbours rather than room mates. There's nothing wrong with that, many people here have birds that are the best of buds but they would never let them sleep in the same cage

Sorry what i meant was to seperate them when they fight not put the seperator only when they fight [emoji85] (sorry my brain is fried right now)

The divider would be there ALL the time basically making 2cages in 1 and they would only be let out together with me being there to supervise them & seperate them if she decides to start pecking his feet again.

i know theres nothing wrong with having them in seperate cages i just want them to be in way bigger space than they have been in one big cage that can be divided but still giving a massive amount of space
