Talking Big Cage Mistake - REALLY BIG MISTAKE

Sponsored Links
So I decided to buy Tsali a new cage. He has a huge beautiful cage - domed top sized for a Macaw. He doesn't utilize much of the cage so a great portion is wasted space. He also has a large wooden play stand that hubby and I made for him. He has never enjoyed playing on the playstand.

I figured if I bought a cage with a play top I could sell the playstand and get rid of one big bulky thing in the living room. Well I found the perfect cage - a Prevue Hendryx Delux - been looking at it for some time. It is beautiful - has a domed top on one side and then the play top on the other side. So I finally bit the bullet and ordered it.

It came in two huge boxes - when I looked at the dimensions, I took a gigantic gasp of horror!! Apparently I ordered the "DOUBLE" which is 35.8" wide 45" deep and 63.5" tall. WOOPSIE, I meant to order the single size which is 24" wide, 36.5" deep and 63.5" tall. Yikes, the double is just way too big, so tomorrow I will be contacting the company to find out how much it will cost me to return the wrong cage. It weighs 97 lbs. and came fed ex. so I am figuring the return shipping is going to be . Here are pics of the two cages -- and oh - the double cage was about $80 less than the single because it was on sale -- they looked identical so I ordered the least expensive one.

Bummer! Are you sure it's "too big"? What is Tsali's take on the matter

Hope the return process isn't too difficult.

Re: Big Cage Mistake - REALLY BIG MISTAKE

I would love to keep the cage, but a huge downsize in our living space is in the near future. We are selling the horse farm - our house is right at 5500 sq ft. We are looking at condos around 1500 sq ft so size matters.

I will probably wind up listing it on FB Market Place.

Re: Big Cage Mistake - REALLY BIG MISTAKE

I'd keep an open mind still. Our condo is only 984 sq ft and Kiwi has his "single macaw" cage next to his play stand. Together, they take up about a 60x30" swath of the living room and it's still not too bad space-wise. Before this, we were in a 750 sq ft sublet basement with that setup too.

If he's anything like my CAG, your baby will use every single inch of that cage. Personally I'd hang on to it.

Re: Big Cage Mistake - REALLY BIG MISTAKE

I kind of agree with greytness, just because he's not using it all now.......

Plus once you add all the toys you feel you just have to get him, all that space kinda fills up quick.

Trust me every time you go for parrot food you will be ogling the toys, thinking about how much fun he will have playing with them, and also knowing in the back of your mind all the fun he's going to have DESTROYING them!

Re: Big Cage Mistake - REALLY BIG MISTAKE

Find out all the relevant costs of the return and then sit and think on it for a short while. Bear in mind that the more active a parrot is the more healthy they are likely to be. If you think that Tsali can make use of it and enjoy doing so then that would make it a great investment in her future. :-)

Re: Big Cage Mistake - REALLY BIG MISTAKE

Oh dear! I'd wait until you move, then think about the size. If it is too big and you've looked after it in it's box and not used it I would guess you'll probably be able to get nearly your money back because of the discount you got. So other than having to wait to solve the problem it's a win win!

Re: Big Cage Mistake - REALLY BIG MISTAKE

See that would be a waste on Salty, he rarely spends much time in his cage, and that little bit is either on his sleeping perch or playing with his toys on the floor. Say about 1/3 of his cage. That IS a nice cage though. Tsali will at the very least like that he can flap his wings any where in it.
