I'm looking for a good aviary cage for a blue and gold macaw, preferably under or around $1000, would a stainless steel dog kennel work if I could find one? He isn't going to live in it, or ever be unsupervised, it's just for me and him to be able to hang out outside safely because he loves the fresh air

Stainless Steel Parrot Cage Design and well-over 1000 USD!

Not aware of any large Dog Kennels made of Stainless Steel. The problem with using Dog grade Kennels, the door closings and locks are easily disassembled /opened by a MAC.

If the lock is the main problem, it shouldn't be too big a deal since I will always be in there with him and he does listen when I tell him to stop. But would the bars be strong enough to support him and a perch? And most seem to be galvanized, which is harmful to birds I think, is there any way to make it safe?

At the shelter I volunteered at, they purchased the large dog kennels from places like Costco and then zip tied coated PVC mesh on sides and top. For the smaller birds, you can get the double door type or create an entryway so you open one gate/door, close it and then open the one to the flight, so no chance of a smaller guy getting out past you.

Support a perched MAC, yes!
Safe, Never! Galvanized and Zinc Coated is the same. Zinc is classified as a Toxic Heavy Metal.

Short of never allowing it around your MAC, No! Everything is at best a half measure. Is a half measure, is within your safe range, that becomes your choice. May you choice wisely, after all its only the health of your MAC, right!

I was looking for the same thing, but for an Alexandrine. I did quite a lot of research looking at other animal enclosures and sourcing the materials and building it myself, but I came to the conclusion that a purpose built aviary was the best way to go. It was the material of the wire mesh and the quality of the build that convinced me. I couldn't find anything that was safe.

I'm in the UK and got an 8"x6"x4" aviary including delivery for £380, so if the prices are anything like that where you are you could have a palace for 1000! I ordered it from a specialist service that built it for me rather than buying one of the big brands that do free-standing aviaries. Doesn't seem right, but I'd have paid 3 times more for one of these and I got to chose where the door went, which way it opened, etc... on mine. I'm building it up against one wall of my house so it's 3 sides and a roof, but I was still surprised by the price. It's sectional too so I can add to it! I've had "macaw mesh", which is the appropriate gauge for a bigger bird if I get one in the future.

Do you know what sort of size you could get for your money if you had one made for you?

Where would I even really go about looking for one? I've done some basic googling and turned up some decent stuff for a lot of money, but does anyone have any recommendations? I tend to be pretty bad at fiding these things myself. I hadnt even thought of a custom built one, I just sorta assumed that would be even more money but I'll have to see

You can also get painted or powder coated dog kennels, but I'm not sure about the safety of those either. I think it would be safer than galvanized as long as there was no chewing going on.

$1000 out door Stainless cage??.....

IMO Any large welding shop will likely have stainless screens in stock. if they have it, see what they can assemble in the approximate size you want. You could start out simply by finding out if they have 6 pieces of 4'x4' material and go from there on the design. You may even be able to visit and pick what they may have left over.

I remember a welding shop in a rural PA area that had a lot of left over stuff. I welded my own outdoor aviary for a BFA. I got pics somewhere.... anyways..

Its a good activity for them to round out a days work . You end with the biggest best deal best materials this way. However it may take you a bit longer than if you were to just buy something from somewhere..

OH!!!

Duh.. here is what I did for my macaw. I had a dozen left over bean, ivy or tomato? landscaping panels that measured 2'x6' - it was easy to wire 8 of them together forming a stop sign shape. cut some plywood for a roof. wired some food and water bowls to the walls cut a couple of branches for a perch.. I think i got pics around somewhere, let me know if you want DIY info..

Its easy to find this stuff and buy it. you can always call a friend!! or just google the below! Take pride in everything you build yourself!

Stainless Steel Welded Wire Mesh: From 2 x 2 Mesh to 4 x 4 Mesh
