Adding Horizontal Bars?

When I have needed to take my Conure somewhere, I used a cheap small cage. While driving, he likes to hang onto the cage sides for stability. The sides have horizontal bars which make it easy for him to hang onto.

I decided to purchase a better quality travel cage. I got a tremendous deal on a new cage from EBay. And although I research everything to death, I missed the fact that this cage does not have horizontal bars.

I was hoping for possible suggestions on how to add some horizontal "bars" to at least one side of the cage. Of course chicken wire would work but I don't feel this would be a safe alternative.

I'm not sure what kind of distances you're looking at, but for trips to vet for example, we use a plastic travel crate. Calming, it seems, and Bird can grab bars. He bounces off the bars in a regular travel cage and this one was actually a gift to us from our vet to rein Genghis Conure in a bit.

I should add that it provides shelter from wind and elements in our lovely Ohio winters.

Try shifting the dowel perch closer to the access door with the goal of your Parrot being a comfortable distances from the door to hang-on. Also, you will note that it will be easier for your Parrot to Step-down /Step-up in and out of the cage.

Can you just coarse-weave something in between the upright bars ?
Small pliable twigs perhaps ( we were discussing willow in another topic, those would do great, and also be a nice distracion -> something to gnaw upon)

Mine rides on top of the seat behind my head (put a towel over it in case she poops) and on my shoulder, 50/50. She loves riding in the car. I'm not a fast driver and do drive carefully, but the faster I drive on the highway, the louder she screams.

Thanks for the suggestions. Another way I thought of last night was to add some ladders, side by side, on one side.

Having him ride without a cage I would enjoy. BUT, although I drive school buses and am very careful, I have a lot of bad luck with OTHER drivers constantly cutting me off and having to hit the brakes hard. Would be afraid he would be launched forward.
