I have an African Grey that is 25 years old (Calvin) and he needs a new cage. I really wanted to buy a stainless steel cage because I plan to move to the North Carolina coast within the next year. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to come up with enough money to buy one from Expandable Habitats, Kings Cages, or Animal Environments. I saw the stainless steel cages from Prevue but they are A LOT less money and I'm trying to find out if anyone has one or knows anything about them. Thanks.

I have a Prevue stainless steel cage that is coated in white. I'm really impressed with it. I was worried about it arriving damaged because I'd read the reviews on Amazon and it was, but only minimally in ways that didn't affect its use so I didn't bother replacing anything. I like it a lot .

Thanks for replying. The white coating on stainless steel must be something not offered here in the U.S. When I look at the Prevuepet.com website, the cage I'm interested in is Model 3455 and it is only in the shiny stainless steel.

There is no reason to add powder coating to stainless steel as it adds cost and additional prep steps to provide a surface for the powder to adhere. Likely the cage is traditional steel.

If I recall correctly, Prevue manufactures much of their product line in China in one of the two facilities that are still making cages.

All Stainless Steel is not the same! There are grades, which defines their market /application. (Web search Stainless Steel Grades for greater detail) Another factor that comes into play is the thickness of the bars used, the spacing, and the number of cross bars used. Finally, what effort is placed into buffing the welds and the cage faces to provide the shine. It all adds up to define the cost of the cage.

Regard cage design, select the cage that provides a full front opening door (top to bottom) as it will make your life much easier. Traditional rectangle provides the greatest space and ease cleaning. The flat top provides for the addition of a play /perch area. Not as pretty as other styles but provides vertical usable space.

FYI: Buy extra water and food bowls with the cage. Finding replacements a few years later becomes very difficult!!!

On a side note, IMHO, being able to quickly roll the cage out the door(s) in an emergency has merit, also its easier too deep clean a cage outside. So measure the doors and allow for a bit a wiggle room and keep the depth of the cage under that measurement.

FYI 2: Unless you are near the ocean, there is little need to buy Stainless Steel as the primary reason to buy Stainless Steel is greatly to totally avoid rusting. Once one is 20 to 30 miles inland there is limited concern if any to be concern regarding salt in the air.

One thing I don’t understand about rusted cages. The biggest culprit is allowing your fid to bathe in the cage! The mess is so unnecessary!

Thanks for all the information. A lot of good things to consider. There is a stainless steel Kings Cage for sale locally but it is the "European style" and I'm not sure how an African Grey would like that. Also, it's a lot of money -- even used. The one on the Kings website is a little over $4,000.00 and the one for sale is $2500.00 I'm also concerned because I don't know how safe it is to buy a used cage when the bird died. The last thing I want to do is jeopardize the health of my African Grey. I appreciate any and all input. This is such a big and important decision!

Forgot to add...the place I am moving is a lot closer to the ocean than 20 miles. I can actually see the lighthouse on the nearest beach from where I will be living.

So, an evaluation plan with your Parrot is very important part of your overall plan.

The reason Stainless Steel is so expensive is its long life...

The reason Stainless Steel is so very common in Food Processing and Surgery Suites is its easy of cleaning to assure a germ free surface.

Hot water and Dawn dish soap (original) for washing, and fresh clean tap water for rising. Dry with clean towels and let stand in bright Sunshine will provide an excellent base clean. More extensive clearers can be used, but in all cases the Dawn soap wash should be your final step.

Thank you. That makes me feel much better about buying a used cage. But, as you mentioned, there's no way you could roll this cage out to clean it or in an emergency without take it apart.

Try changing your Vantage Point in Life!

Solutions are every where and become ever more obvious when you align yourself in their direction and limit looking for reason why not. If the cage is too larger in a single piece, look at quick method to separating into a couple pieces, etc, etc, etc...

Hello,

Both of my birds are in Prevue Hendryx all metal bird cages. I love them & I think my birds do too! The ones I have are all metal, very durable (they're from the 50's) and super easy to clean! The top is flat so the birds can play and hang out on top. They should last forever. I had to replace my other cage after only 1 1/2 years because the plastic bottom cracked in several places. Prevue Pet Products now carries the Madison bird cage which is all metal & affordable.

I do apologise for talking rubbish. My cage is not stainless steel, it is apparently "wrought iron" which is why it is powder coated! Still impressed with Prevue though!! I got that bit right!
