Some time ago, I mentioned that we were intending to enclose part of our back deck so I could allow my birds some flying exercise. Well, Stuff happened and months went by and I got really depressed, thinking it was never going to happen.

Well, yesterday the work was completed! Yay!!!!

I have an area 3m x 4m netted off with locking doors and liftable window screens that will enable me to have all the birds out in a safe, easy-clean area! Not only that, but Doubting Thomas (my husband) has *finally* seen the sense in netting off the remainder of the deck, which would give me a *huge* area for birdie purposes. He reckons we can do that next year when finances have recovered a bit. Woohoo!

All we did was to place big stainless steel mesh screens with aluminium frames on the existing framework of the deck. Double doors lead on to the main (larger) area and lifting 'window' sections snib to the ceiling so we can avoid the sensation of being caged in when we want to. It's excellent!

I'm not going to let the birds out in it until I've done a few things. Firstly, I need to remove the Little Gentlemens (my son's Lovies) as I don't want the bigger birds to have access to their cage, even from the outside (we all know about lovebirds and Other Peoples' Toes). Secondly, I want to cover the big cages with plywood or something which will prevent the bigger birds from having access to the cage roofs. Same principle: I don't want anyone losing any toesies! Thirdly, hubby has offered to install a curtain track so I can hang my cage covers rather than just draping them on the cages. This will be great in winter and will avoid the problem of cockroaches congregating in the out-of-use covers. Finally, I need to re-jig our playgym to fit the space and to install hanging ropes and perches and swings. It's going to be so much fun! Heeheeheehee!

This is a wonderful development for us, as this house doesn't lend itself to having the birds abroad in it. Too many big windows, too many doorways and too many fragile things just make it impractical to have big birds flying about inside. Now, they have their own area to exercise in and will soon have an even bigger one.

My plan is to have them out separately at first, just to see how they cope with the new arrangements. Over time, I'll see if they get along together well enough to let everyone out at once. The Lovies don't come out as they are not tame, but I have high hopes that the Beaks and Rosetta will be able to play at the same time. For now, they show no interest in each other, despite their cages butting together.

So yeah. That's my big news. I'm so happy, I could just blow up and go pop! :D
