We have simply resorted to calling the local Hasmat Team. With the vastly reduced traffic, they haven't had much to do and seem happy to practice!

Plus, the neighbors tend to call the fire department a bunch less...

I usually take apart the larger sides of the cage, then toss them into the shower, make it blistering hot, then go back in the shower 20min later and everything is clean with some minor scrubbing of course... no solvents.

Re: How do you guys clean your cage ?

We have only had Perci for a little over a week now. But if we see poop on any of his perches we clean it off immediately. As for the bottom of the cage, once a week. We emptied the tray, put in new paper, and hand cleaned the bottom of the cage with hot water and paper towels.

I am sure has time goes on this will be improved on lol

If I were you, I'd use more than just hot water (something that is safe but has better germ killing ability--- most standard cleaners aren't safe).
I'd recommend changing paper more frequently as well.

That having been said, hot water doesn't kill much of anything unless it is boiling and for many minutes. Sure, it's better than cold water, but you should look into getting a bird-safe cleaner.

Vinegar is a fairly weak disinfectant, but it is better than just water..
Something like f10 SC will actually kill viruses, bacteria and fungi and is safe around birds (it should be allowed to dry before they touch it) but it can be used in the same room when diluted properly. The yellowish kind doesn't have to be rinsed off, but the green kind does, as it contains soap.

Re: How do you guys clean your cage ?

Does anyone use a steam cleaner for cages? I have one cage that is too big to take outside (it has wheels, there are steps down from the back deck). Obviously the birds would be removed from the cage while steaming.

Re: How do you guys clean your cage ?

Bottom of the cage every day, wooden shelf wiped down with disinfectant as with cage bars. Perches scrubbed weekly and wooden toys.
Food and water dishes every day, sometimes twice or more with the water.

Re: How do you guys clean your cage ?

daily newspaper change on bottom of cage, along with cleaning of all bowls.
a couple of times a week, wipe down of bars, wash any pooped on perches
every few weeks, when my son is here to help, take cage outside and jet wash it thoroughly. Dry off with Dettol cleaning wipes and final rub down with a towel.

The kitchen floor, worktops etc, brush and clean 10 times a day!

To add, the newspaper on top of the bottom grate catches all the discarded seed husks, unwanted veg, bits of fruit etc as well as the poop. If veg lies around for any more than a few hours it starts to smell. I just gather the newspaper up so nothing falls onto the bottom of the grate so nothing is lying around. Easy peazy
