Puck is such a cutie!

Now...

What happened to "refurbishing" the cage? Rust to a bird, is the same as, poison to a baby. The members gave you great tips on how to get it all cleaned up BEFORE you put a living creature in there, I'm just trying to understand why you wouldn't follow the instructions?

Also, an other note: human saliva (in this case, via your toothbrush) is toxic to birds.

I used that cage to take him home, because I didn't have a travel cage yet (which I promptly got), but he doesn't stay in it. That cage he stays in, and his sleep cage, are brand new. I still have the old cage, but it's sitting outside in my bf's yard waiting to be de-rusted.

Also, I took him off the toothbrush right after the the picture. I even bought him his own toothbrush. My understanding isn't that saliva is toxic, but that there can be bacteria in human mouths that birds don't get along with. I thought it was cute that he was going for my toothbrush.

He's my baby and I'm doing my best to make sure he has a healthy environment.

Also, somehow I didn't know rust was that bad for birds until after I got him, but he appears to be fine. He wasn't in that cage very long. Do you think it could cause a problem from with short exposure? He's getting blood drawn next week (had a new-pet checkup yesterday and they weren't able to get a big enough blood sample to do the whole blood test, so we need to go back next week), and I could request an iron test (isn't that what it is?).

It's dried berry juice!! He gets it all over himself and makes a big, silly mess, and then wipes his beak on me. XD

Please don't shoot the messenger here, but according to my vet (well respected avian vet) rust is not that dangerous to the bird. I don't want everyone jumping on me as I have sat here wondering if I should even post this. However when I took Kiwi home in the rusty cage and posted the questions here, I was so, so worried about all the responses that when I took her to the vet that was my first concern. He said that he was not worried at all that it is not as dangerous as people are making it out to be. Again, I am no expert just dont want people freaking out without reason! It is always best to get a clean cage without the rust (alot of bacteria can get caught up in as well!) however don't freak out about the rust part of it.

I'll ask my vet next week. I googled it, and I didn't find a much conclusive evidence about it, aside from people on message boards saying so.

He is the cutest, looks like a little bundle of energy. How do you keep up?

He can be playful, but he also spends a lot of time eating fruit and just sitting there being mellow. I kept reading that caiques "never stop moving" but I haven't found that to be the case with him! I'm totally okay with it though.

He likes to stay up late though. One time my boyfriend and I fell asleep on top of the bed watching a TV show, while he was on his table. Somehow he made it over to the bed (his wings are clipped) and got on top of us while we were sleeping and kept alternating between playing with my hair and biting my boyfriend's nipple! We were annoyed because he kept waking us up, but I eventually woke up enough to put him to bed! LOL
