Rehoming my 2 Caiques

I have been a member of the forum for a while and I am a small GCC breeder. I have had my 2 Caiques since they were a few months old and they are great birds. They are not breeders and belong to my son. However, I take care of them of course. They play great together and I'm trying to have them stay together. The reason I'm rehoming them is because they are dangerous to my other birds. Especially the small guys. They are obsessed with them (well the white-bellied is) and only think of ways to get at them. She has hurt all of them at one point or another, along with some babies. Being a breeder where I have babies at one time or another makes it difficult to keep everyone safe.

They are 2 girls, the white-bellied is 4 and the black-headed is 2. Looking for a home with no small birds. I am in CT and don't mind driving half way for the right family to surrounding states.

I hope you find them homes....I know how it is when you must make a decision of which one has to go due to everyone's safety. That's why I give up Java for that reason.

That is very hard indeed . However, I will keep them until I am sure I find the perfect home for them.....

perfectly understandable.
I too am super protective when I am feeding my babies, and I make sure Safari is NEVER out.

The problem with the white-bellied is that when she's out, she goes onto the little guys cages and try to get at them through the bars. Knowing Conures you can imagine that they don't stand back. All the injuries have happened through cage bars! That's why she needs a home with no small birds as being out of cage at different times (which they do) will not stop her from harassing them unfortunately.

They are lovely birds. I hope that you are able to find them a good home.

This must of been such a hard decision, but I can understand why you would choose it. The fact that they have managed to injure all our birds at some point is scary, you must always be fearful of it happening again.

It's great that they have each other, I would think being re-homed with a buddy would be easier than being re-homed alone

I hope you find the PERFECT home for them. And hope their owners will be nice to them.

I wish this opportunity would have come along when researching and looking for our Hahns macaw. Caiques were on our list of birds we were searching for and would have had no issues taking both since we were a bird free home at that point in time. I hope you find a wonderful home that is willing to give them the time and dedication required. They have very strong but wonderfully colorerful personalities.

Just a thought Echo , I would want my beloved birds going to a "bird person". Sometimes on here when your on everyday. You kind of get to know people. We seem to live far apart from each other. Im suggesting this only because Ive experienced it. My Rb2 was flown from Georgia to New York [And he was GREAT}. Also Shelly on here was was able to get a Macaw [they wanted a great home which was Shelly].This 10 year old Macaw was sent from the Carolinas to California [and she is doing great]. Just want our birds to have the best homes possible Good Luck

Yes you are right. I would consider flight for the right person!

I don't think I've ever posted on these forums before although I registered some time ago. I have two caiques (as well as other birds) and my female BHC wants to kill any other bird except her WBC buddy - sometimes she's a real butt to him as well. I have linnies that are pets and also breeders but fortunately Lexie doesn't seek out birds to attack - she just goes after them if they come near her. I hope you find a great home for the caiques!

I've adopted both of my conures from members of other forums. One I drove to pick up and the other was flown in. I don't regret getting either one, except for the fact that one was not what I was told he was.... but that's ok, he's not going anywhere! lol

I would love to have a caique(s) as I *LOVE* their antics! I just know I'm not in a position to take on any more birds, I've got my hands full enough as it is!

I would suggest for you to get in contact with Emily of the Roaming Parrot. I've met her in person (although this was years ago, we used to be members of the same bird club) and she is a caique fanatic!!! She may be able to put you in touch with other caique fans!

Did you find a new home for them?

I would love to (my girlfriend would kill me) but all of mine are big 'uns.

My "tiniest" bird is my amazon.

And my jealous RFM already protests that she doesn't get held enough. So, adding more to the mix, at this point, wouldn't be fair to them...

No not yet. I had a few people interested in each separately but I'd like for them to remain together. Just got an email from someone who might be interested but I'm still finding out what kind of home/person she is and if it would be a good match.

I'd love to consider it, but my two nut jobs are males! This would not end well! Lol

I actually thought about reaching out to inquire about the Ciaques. I have a Mini macaw and the RFM. I am not sure about the mini and them living in the same house. Then I think about how Valentino is so into us. He can be jealous of the dog and even the cat but has not acted out about it.

I don't blame you for sticking to your guns about keeping them together. If they have lived together so long they should probably stay together. I am not sure age of breeding age/hormones but I believe they are old enough now that if they are getting along I believe they will still be getting along years from now.

I also worry about getting another parrot with Valentino? Would they attack him? Would he attack them? Valentino has no interaction with Julio the Noble macaw at all. Their cages are right next to each other but they could care less about the other and Valentino is bonded to me where Julio is bonded to Lupe. I have never had issue with either bird attacking the other. I also do not know how bring in the Caiques would fair with my current situation. I think I will have play it safe and think this would not make a good mix nor create balance with my current flock.

I wish you well with finding the right family for them. I am sorry you need to rehome them but you know what is best for your flock. Finding the right family will take time but when you find them it will make rehoming them easier on your heart.
