Rough Bird Week

2 Black Headed Caiques - Bunsen & Beaker
Holy cow... this was not the best bird week. The weekend before last, the boys & I visited the bird store. This was our first trip without my wife. Apparently, if she isn't holding the cage in the car, they get motion sickness. This was a little unsettling in itself. Birds vomiting is never a good sign.

Once we got to the bird store, I started talking to the employees. We chat about birds a lot. They're good ppl. One of them pointed out that Beaker had some stress bars. To be honest, I wasn't familiar with them at all. Most likely, they're from weening or the move from the store to our home. I can't help that nagging feeling in the back of my skull that questions whether they're taken care of or not, though.

So we move into this weekend. I'm already feeling a little on edge with the bird situation. Beaker starts honking. By honking, at the end of his, "where the heck are you?" call, there's a little goose honk. It sounds like he's going hoarse. It's actually really cute.... until I start looking it up on the internet. Then I start worrying about respiratory stuff. No problem, though. It's before noon on Saturday. I call up the vet. This is where I go into hyper-panic mode. They explain this can actually be the first signs of an upper-respiratory infection. These spread very quickly in birds and she instructs me to head to the emergency vet pronto since they're about to close.

My wife is teaching an all day class to 50 elementary kids at this point, so I pack the boys up and prepare for them to get sick the whole way there. I'll make this long story just a little less long. Beaker was fine. I got what amounted to some very expensive pictures of his lungs. Since the tech and vet spent more time playing with the birds than examining them, I asked for discount. They weren't keen on that idea, though ;-).

Alright, I just needed to type out my sigh of relief. Hope all is well with you other bird people.

PS I want my Saturday back.

Hahahahaha...........Hmmmmmm......It doesn't work this way unfortunately.
All your time is taken when you introduce birds in the house.
I can't finish anything I start doing in the house anymore. It's one thing or another with my birds.
I just hope it's going to get better in the future when I don't run to their cages to check on them or to socialize with them all the time. I could hope at least......:p..........:54:
I am glad everything is OK with your birdies.

Echo! I never explained my question on your thread. I'm sorry. I have some friends who are thinking about getting Caiques. They're still in the research phase right now, and I think they will be for the next couple of months. I decided not to tell them about your girls because I was worried about pressuring them. They would be first time bird owners, so it's something they have to consider long and hard. I've encouraged them to hop on the forums and ask questions. We'll see what comes of it. :-D

As for us, two is certainly all we can handle. :p

Been there, done that with dogs and kids. It's expensive and extremely stressful. I'm glad all is well.

That's also why I can't have any more birds :)

I see. And yes, I can't imagine 4 Caiques!!!! Yikes! Unless you have a huge outdoor aviary where they can get their energy out!

Im glad Beaker was fine [I was really starting to hold my breath as I was reading] These guys are like little human beings [I would have been sick with worry too!! ] Echo ,I wish I had a cage ! I would take them and they would be deliriously happy here. But I just spent 950 on birds .

Yes thats me. 8 caiques. I believe I have no more work than the rest of you ( so far) since they mostly entertain themselves.

Hi Joel:

Wow...I can only imagine how worrisome this all must have been. Thanks to your posts, I feel as though I know Bunsen and Beaker; I'm so happy to hear all is well.
Derek

PS Since pretty much every day is a holiday for Eliza and Henry, they have graciously offered you one of their days to make up for losing your Saturday. Their only conditions are that you have to spend it with them, and continually shower them with banana chips... ;)
