Arg, totally forgot to ask this, what are the recommended pellets you guys use? The breeder has all his birds on pellet diet and I am just asking him now which brand he uses... I would assume like all other pet foods, some are MUCH better than others. As soon as I find out the brand I'll post it.

Thanks,
Dan

My birds: Skyler/Sky, violet Indian Ringneck. Mother's birds: Norman, African Grey and Mildred, Blue Crowned Conure.
I use Harrison's pellets and I cannot be happier with them.

My mother was converting her birds to Tropican pellets but she stopped for some reason.

I think they're a good brand and they smell amazing.

Since I liked them so much, I tried converting Cookie to them, but she prefers Harrison's.

LOL I found some other forums that review the pellets when I searched on google and it seems like many folks love the smell and a couple says it's completely overpowering. I can't imagine this will stink up the whole room or a house??? I find it hard to believe this can smell worse that the Orijen Atlantic fish dry dog food I feed my dog lol! If you leave th ebag open too long, the house smells like a fishnet.

Sadly, Tropican doesn't make the whole house smell like them, just the room they're in, but it would be great if they DID make the whole house smell nice.

LOL well it's actually a very high quality dog food... extremely high protein diet, NO grain products and all locally sources ingredients. My dog is a wolf hybrid so she needs a high protein high fat protein diet but I don't have the willpower for a raw meat type of diet or make my own, so this is my compromise. At first you could only buy this at holistic pet food places but FINALLY most pet shops are starting to carry it as more and more people realize the $20 100lbs bag of dog food from Walmart is maybe one step higher than saw dust.

But yes, it stinks lol!

In fact I think I have heard of this dog food before. I saw an ad a while ago.

LOL sawdust! That does remind me when thinking about getting a dog, larger dog = larger expense. Even more so than small bird/large bird, since we're taking about creatures weighing many pounds not ounces. Plus dog toys and supplies are as expensive as bird stuff! I bought my dad's SMALL dog new bowls and a toy the other day and I had sticker shock!

Wolf hybrid huh? Didn't you say you are a dog trainer? Being rather a newbie with dogs, I think I'd be intimidated in the way I'd be with any large carnivorous mammal... :D

Hagen Tropican is good, but it does have added sugar. I use a blend of Harrisons and TOP (Totally Organic Pellets.) Here's an ingredient comparison of the three:

Hagen Tropican:
Ground corn, soybean meal, ground wheat, ground dehulled peanuts, ground brown rice, dehulled sunflower seed, canola oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract), calcium carbonate, sugar, tomato powder, oat groats, ground flaxseed, alfalfa nutrient concentrate, L-lysine, yeast extract, DL-methionine, salt, choline chloride, carotene, biotin, vitamin E supplement, niacin, calcium L-ascorbyl-2-monophosphate, zinc oxide, manganous oxide, d-calcium pantothenate, vitamin B12 supplement, beta-carotene, copper sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, inositol, folic acid, vitamin A supplement, calcium iodate, sodium selenite, vitamin D3 supplement.

Harrison's adult lifetime:

*Ground Yellow Corn, *Ground Hull-less Barley, *Hulled Grey Millet, *Ground Soybeans, *Ground Shelled Peanuts, *Ground Shelled Sunflower Seeds, *Ground Lentils, *Ground Green Peas, *Ground Toasted Oat Groats, *Ground Alfalfa, *Ground Rice, *Chia Seed, Calcium Carbonate, Montmorillonite Clay, Vitamin E Supplement, Ground Dried Sea Kelp, Sea Salt, *Sunflower Oil, Natural Mixed Tocopherols, Lecithin, Rosemary Extract, *Algae Meal, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Dl-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Niacin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, D-Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Zinc Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Calcium Carbonate, *Vegetable Oil.

Totally Organics Pellets:

Rice, hulled millet, barley, alfalfa leaf, sunflower seed hulled, sesame seeds unhulled, quinoa whole, buckwheat hulled, dandelion leaf powder, carrot powder, spinach leaf powder, purple dulse, kelp, rose hips powder, rose hips crushed, orange peel powder, lemon peel powder, rosemary whole leaf, cayenne ground, crushed red chili peppers, nettle leaf.

Not sure how useful this is, lol! The TOP pellets aren't fortified with any vitamins, but I like that they have more leafy green ingredients. My birds seem to prefer the Harrisons, but will eat some of the TOP as well.
Neither of them smell either ;]
