So me and my boyfriend are leaving for mexico for a month and im already having anxiety to the thought of leaving him for so long. He going to stay with my mum who is very competent but im worried he will have issues with us being gone considering we have never been apart since we aquired him. We've had him for a year but im sure hes at least 3. Should i be worried? Do caiques bond to the point of being sad and not eating when their human is away? Or will he just have a blast with my mum and not miss us at all? Should we skype him while were gone or would that make things worse?

Depends on the bird.. They can hold a grudge for a couple of weeks once you return..
We've boarded them for a few days at a time, they consider it like a vacation and don't normally have any real issues, but that's only a few days. They do seem to love Skype/Facetime on a tablet and will respond to it.

Good luck!

Like Dave said, it depends on the bird and for a month, your caique and you might have a problem.....I was gone for longer periods than that, but I prepped my birds before the first time, with longer & longer periods of being gone and I made a couple of DVDs and CDs of me and us that my bird sitter could play for them.....

Good luck...don't forget your Lomotil or whatever today's favored medication is ! ! !

Things I would've considered ridiculous until we owned Caiques... I'm trying the FaceTime thing next time we're out of town.

When we left for a week, B&B pouted quite a bit. The only time I've seen a Caique not get over a grudge involved a 3 month trip. A friend of ours went away to school for the summer.

Considering all the time Eliza and Henry spend playing with my iPad, I kinda suspect they're FaceTiming with Bunsen and Beaker when I'm not around...

Years ago when we first got Willie the macaw, we left a week on vacation. He was quite happy to see me home. Now days I think they care less if we're here or not....lol.....But a few do get upset, Malachai especially, when we left for just a few days in the recent trip. He was very upset with me......

It really depends on the bird. Robin is unusual... He is an already independent species, who although is very bonded to me, has always been easy going. Years ago... I became ill, and for about a month I had to leave my apartment (I lived alone at the time) and be cared for at my mom's house. I saw Robin only a few times a week to say a very brief 'hi' before I had to lay down from weakness as my dad cleaned his cage and made sure he had dry food to last him. I know, awful. Anyway, he was actually fine with his toys and 'living alone' under an emergency situation. Thank goodness he's a species who doesn't have a tendency to pluck. He was fine, and when I returned, he welcomed me and acted like I was never gone. We just picked up where we left off... He's always been the best bird :).

I haven't read anywhere about caiques and plucking...i sure hope they aren't like that I would feel terribly guilty! My main concern is that and eating...as long as he is well while we are gone any behavioral issues can be addressed when we return. If i know he will be healthy i can go without being too stressed..ill only miss him tons!! :(
