So yesterday I was given a pair of bonded caique brothers. They've been together since hatching, and are very close. They're 8 years old, and had to be rehomed because their original owner is moving into a much smaller house. Their previous living arrangement was in a room dedicated as an aviary, with about 10 other separately caged birds. As such, they've acquired the screeching habits of their conure cousins.

I had a caique once before, several years ago, which I had raised from a chick. She was a wonderful bird with a great personality, who unfortunately died from an undetermined cause. I've also had several experiences with fostering chicks of various breeds. So I know some about this breed, and birds in general, but I've never had a second hand bird before. Much less a bonded pair of second hand birds.

As I said before, I've only had them about a day, and their previous owner says they are very sweet. And while one brother seems pretty content and unfazed, the other has already displayed a primary desire to simply maim me. I know it's still very early on in their new lives, but any advice at all would be unbelievably appreciated.

Their names are Mango and Tango. So far, Tango is the sweeter of the two. We also came to the conclusion earlier that perhaps the source of Mango's dislike is that (and this may be TMI here) I'm actually at the end of my monthly cycle. We can't be sure if that's the problem, but it's well established that many birds are sensitive to that. So we're hoping it's just a hormone issue, and that if I let him be for a few days, he'll get used to me and we can be friends. :)

I don't believe that for a second. I've never had a bird show any difference no matter the time of month.

I'm with Karen on that, I've had both my birds now for almost a year (almost two for just Avery) and never once have they displayed any difference towards me based on my cycle. One is male and one is female.

I personally would imagine that Mango is showing anger displacement towards you for feeling "abandoned" by his previous owner. It's difficult to try and explain to a bird that the person they've been with since they can recall is no longer there, and now all of a sudden you are and they aren't. I would give it time and continue to do hands-off positive reinforcement with him.
