Are Caiques uncommon?

I joined a Caique group on FB (not because I own one) and was shocked how expensive they are. I had thought they were a fairly common species of parrot in the trade, but their expense seems to indicate otherwise. Just curious how "common" they are in to find in reputable parrot stores?

Also...how do you pronounce it? I've bee saying "Kai - ACHE" but I think the correct way is "Kai - EEK" ?

It's usually pronounced like "Cake". They are available but they are expensive because of the demand. But THEY NEED A LOT OF ATTENTION, and they aren't always the best behaved, it depends. I know they are cutes as all hell on youtube videos; I was considering one but, you should always ask yourself what can I provide the bird. I found with my lifestyle a GCC was perfect.

Hello. Caiques are not uncommon but are, in the pet trade, expensive. I’m supposing there’s a lot of reasons for that, but have you considered adoption?

I think it’s pronounced “cayk” with a long a sound.

Ohhhh, no, a Caique is not for me!

I'll be starting out with a nice quiet Pionus when I'm ready to adopt. And yes, I'm all for rescues! Regarding the pronunciation -- wow, I've been saying it wrong for years. So it's a single syllable?

I've always said it like "Kai-EEK". I guess I've been saying it wrong too? But that's how I've heard others say it.

To be honest LeaKP might be a little more on the money there's a little Y sound at the end. But it's no cackoy or anything like that, it's just one syllable.

Kai-EEK is how I have always heard it pronounced. Perhaps it's one of those names that varies by region.

They aren't the most common or the least common. I've only seen them a few times but I know a couple if breeders; I'm hoping to get two someday (not for breeding purposes) but right now I couldn't give them what they need without neglecting the rest of my flock.

There are a few breeders here in Alberta.

I had to ask my friend who breeds them how to pronounce it, I had no idea before that.

I've always heard it pronounced "cake". I'm not sure if they're "rare" as in difficult to find or not, I've seen them for sale in several bird stores in 2 different states, but they do always seem to be expensive compared to other birds of similar size. I almost wonder if they don't breed as readily in captivity as similarly sized birds and that's why they're a bit more expensive? Or all that energy they have is just more trying on the breeder

i have two lovely caique and i had to travel to get them, they are expensive but a great bird. the green thighed and yellow are the hardest to get hold of.

I always pronounced it Kaa-Kee

Like in "antique"... "Ann Teek"

So strange to see then variations! I’ve never heard it pronounced, only written. So in my world I pronounced it kai-yeek.

The correct pronunciation is Kai-eek i read. I really wanted one of these but all research suggests they are not other bird friendly and can be very violent. Better to pair with another Caique or as only bird. They are really popular pets though and you can even buy them in the UK so that says alot. Really fun birds, very hyper x
