As you guys may know from a post I made, my mother has two rescue cockatiels, one with an injury to the head that results in fits and a damaged foot, and another that hates people with a passion. Although we have done our best for them since we got them, a nice big indoor aviary type cage, lots of toys and good food and so on, we never got far with taming them. The injured one, Izzy got to the stage where he was willing to take a treat from up provided the cage bars were between us. After that he kind of reached a plateau and would not advance further with us. Bee, the vicious one, on the other hand, we never made any progress with. After a year or so of trying, we just let them be.

Beside their lack of like for their humans, Bee and Izzy had a pretty great time with us. They loved each other and would spend their days playing and preening and eating, and sometimes fighting together over a toy of piece of food. When Izzy would space out into one of his fits and nearly nothing could bring him around (we could lift him clean from the cage, he would be so out of his mind he had no idea!) Bee would yank on his tail from the perch below to bring him out of it.

Since I moved out mum felt like these guys were too much for her. I was happy to take them, but a better option came up, so, these two have been given to my step fathers brother. He is bird guy, used to breed birds and has had many pet cockatiels in his time. He's wheelchair bound so he's home pretty much 24/7 and has taken these two on as his newest bird project. We know they will be very happy with him, and we (And Alex!) of course get to visit often since they live just down the street.

I'm going to miss them terribly, but this is going to be a better situation for not only them, but for their new owner.

I'll keep you guys posted on any progress they make! :yellow1::grey: It's a sad goodbye, but I think it was time they went to live with someone who could give them the 24/7 attention they deserve. ;)

Glad to hear it's a nice happy ending. It's sad that you have to give them up... but if it's for the birds best interest, then it's worth it! Hope to hear some nice stories about them in the future :)

Thanks guys, especially for not being judgemental. I believe all animals when taken home deserve a forever home, but my mum has some health problems and without me their, they were too much for her, that's why I was planning on taking them myself but this came up, and it was a much better option for both the birds and the human involved!

I visited last weekend, like I said they are relatives so it's good to be able to see the birds when we see them! Izzy has taken a liking to his new keeper, and is on the verge of finally stepping up. Even Bee has had some progress happening, with new people and a new environment to spur him on! It's wonderful to see, not only for the birds, but for the guy to have them for company when his kids are at school and the wife at work. Looks like a happy ending all around for everyone!

So, finally, our rescue birds are part of a happy little family, forever. If this didn't come up they would have stayed with us of course, but we always only considered ourselves their foster family, it never really felt like they never really were ours, if you know what I mean? This has driven me to try to do some parrot fostering of my own in the future for other birds if I ever get the opportunity.
