How old for a cockatiel to lay eggs?

Hey guys. My niece got her cockatiel and my brother mentioned to me on the phone that there was an egg on the floor of the cage she came from. There was one other cockatiel in the cage and I assume they were supposed to be the same age.
The bird was sold as a "hand-fed baby" and since I haven't seen the bird yet I don't know if it's actually a baby or not. I'll see it this weekend.
Nothing wrong with purchasing an adult bird, just makes me angry if he spent more money for this bird because it was supposed to be a baby. He would have gotten it regardless, this is the one my niece fell in love with, they just wouldn't have charged as much for an adult.
Maybe I'm wrong but I assumed they needed to be a few years old before they started laying eggs, like 2 or 3?
At any rate, 'Daisy' was well received and it settling in nicely in 'her' new home. I assume that even if Daisy turns out to be a boy he will still be a girl to my little girly-girl niece

I think my niece said she's white with a slightly yellow face but I'm not sure. Don't know much about cockatiels so I don't know what mutation that would be

Re: How old for a cockatiel to lay eggs?

I think they can lay as early as ten months but it's more common past the one year mark. At the store where I work someone brought in some "hand fed babies" for us which laid eggs the next week, obviously not babies! I was upset and told the lady we just can't do business with someone who was dishonest with us. She told us maybe one of her breeders had gotten mixed up with the babies since the babies were almost identical to them but I think she was just trying to make excuses and in any case why would she be keeping the mom in with the "hand fed babies" :P
