Hi all!
One of my cockatiel pairs - Skyy & Sunny had 3 babies in September. They were well taken care of and two of them grew up and are hale and hearty. The same pair laid another clutch of eggs a week before christmas. However, this time when the 3 eggs hatched, they were neglected and not fed, even though the parents were inside the nesting box, and I only discovered this when I stopped hearing their chirps and looked to find 3 dead little ones, who may have been just a few days old at best.
Well, I emptied the nest and cleaned it up and I see now they've got another 4 eggs laid over the past week.
My question is, Is there any documented reason why the parents neglected and let the babies die? The father seems devoted but it's the mother that feeds babies initially and that hasn't happened. Any insight as to how this may have happened ??
I'm trying to prepare myself to handle things in case the mother doesn't. i've fed 3 weeks old cockatiel babies before but not newborns and the thought freaks me out. They're barely a few millimeters. Thanks!
