MonicaMc and Peeker it is actually coming from the top left part of Rhino's tail feathers and it looks like a dark curly thing sticking out. But I just realized MonicaMc that you are probably right and it must be a piece of a feather that split away, I just couldn't put my finger on it. Thank you all for your replies, I'm sure Rhino will be okay and hopefully the feather piece will fall out after his first molt(:

Oh ok now I see it! Yeah I am guessing it is a shredded part of the feather shaft from a broken feather. If so it will molt out when it's ready and be replaced by a nice new feather.

It might be that your bird has been in a small cage and has not had enough space and his feathers have been affected and damaged, or he needs to be healthier and eat more greens or he really needs a bath because sometimes if there is too much dandura in the feathers( bird dandruff) the feathers and the skin becomes dry causing feathers too be abnormal, but above all I think you should take your baby to the vet just incase. I hope it gets sorted x

I saw it, but what I was looking for specifically was what feather it was coming from and where... which I can't see from that photo alone... the feather its coming from would need to be separated from the rest to clearly see why this part of the feather is 'out of whack'.

What was the outcome of these weird feathers. I noticed these on my tiel as well today. I hand raised tiles many years ago but don't recall seeing feathers like these.

To me from the original poster's picture it looks like part of the feather shaft that split and sticking out like that. Baby tiels are rough with their feathers and they tend to break, shatter, bent, etc but it will molt out and grow out perfect feather afterwards as long as they're careful and not break it again.
