Tiel exposed to pesticides

Been a lurker for a while but we need help and can't seem to find knowledgable answers elsewhere. Unfortunately out baby tiel "Toto" was exposed to pesticides this morning. I had taken him outside in a travel cage and places him away from the house, thought it was fairly obvious I was trying to avoid pesticide exposure. (We live in the desert so no worries, it was plenty warm out) Then the idiot bug guy sprayed all around the patio tiles that Toto was on. His travel cage was on top of another cage that was sitting on a 1 1/2 ft wide walkway and the bug guy sprayed all around that walkway, even tho it was away from the house and didn't think to ask me if I wanted to move the bird. Obviously I am not happy. There were a lot of not so nice 3 and 4 letter words coming out of my mouth this morning.

Toto is a symptomatic, chirping, eating, drinking, pooping. What should I be looking for in a reaction and how long does it usually take for a reaction to show?

I have already contact one avian vet and sought out names and numbers of others that provide after hours services, should poor Toto become symptomatic this weekend. :( :(

I don't have experience with this happening to one of my birds personally- and I'm so sorry that happened, it's awful how careless and ignorant some people can be. I stood guard at my apartment to make sure no one tried to spray while we were gone. I'm so sorry for you and Toto :(

But I do know that with things like fumes and airborne chemicals (cleaners, bleaches, pesticides, etc) that usually by the time a bird is symptomatic it's almost too late. Parrots are prey birds in the wild so they hide any symptoms as best as they can, as to not appear "weak" or "easy food" for predators, which is why parronts are so (rightfully) paranoid about their birdies.

I'd get him to a vet ASAP, don't wait for symptoms, it's better safe than sorry in my opinion. You can always hope that being outside it was ventilated enough and didn't get a dangerous amount into his system- but even still, that close I would be surprised if he didn't get atleast a little bit either from the air, on his cage, etc.

I hope everything turns out okay for you and Toto, my best wishes to you. Hopefully someone with better experience will come along, but that's just what I know of (or what I believe to be truth, anyway.) Best of luck.

Did the product touch your bird? Did he walk on the contaminated surface or breathe in the spray?

Also, find out what product was used to give your Vet more information. Many insectisides are designed to disrupt the neural pathways of insects and you will notice your pet bird staggering and unable to sit on his perch.

Good luck with him. I hope he's okay.

TarrenNToto I am so sorry this happened to you and Toto. I would be furious also. I hope you called the company and gave them a piece of your mind and told them they will be responsible for any medical expenses to Toto. I also would take him to a vet to just be sure and seen. I hope all goes well for you and Toto. Keep us posted please. Thanks.

I could not believe this guy was that ignorant. I told him right on the spot that I had moved the bird to avoid exposure. And he told me he had avoided the areas around the bird cage in the house....but then sprayed all around the one outside :/ I did also call the company, ironically called Responsible something something. Was told the pesticide used was pyrethroids, called the avian vet with this information. I was told to give Toto a bath, which I had already done but it didn't sound like there is anything they can do for Toto, even if he becomes symptomatic it sounds like the best they could do would be to make him comfortable. They guy I spoke with at the company said they had used this spray around many birds before with no problems, which I really question but he seemed fully prepared to take on any vet bills. I am really hoping ToTo's being outside and 4 ft above the ground that was sprayed means he didn't get too much exposure. :(

I am praying that ToTo will be okay. I am glad you called the vet and got his take on it.
How is ToTo this morning?

Thanks for asking, Toto is being typical Toto today. I researched after hours avian vets yesterday should the need arise. But so far, eating, drinking, popping and screeching as usual. He is a lively little fellow and at times pretty demanding, today has been no different. No huddling on the ground or fluffed out feathers or sneezing. Prayers are always appreciated. Thanks:)

I let him and his company know in no uncertain terms what an idiot he was. I almost felt bad for him when I was done with him.....almost. My guess is that is one mistake he will never make again.

Toto is the same as always today. I covered his cage early last night so he could get plenty of rest after a stressful day. He spent the day outside until about 9:00 last night, then I brought him back in to our room where I had aired the room out for a good 7-8 hrs.

I am really hoping that if he was going to react he would have started showing signs by now.

I am so happy to hear that ToTo is his usual self today. Keeping him in my prayers that this has no effects on him at all:)

TarrenNToto so glad to hear Toto has shown no ill signs due to the pesticides. You have done all the right things by taking him outside for fresh air and airing his room out. Please keep us posted. Praying here for Toto.
