Cockatiel vs Budgie

I know the differences are pretty obvious. I guess what I need to know from experienced owners is how difficult they are. I currently own ( ok I'm owned by) a parrotlet. He is moody, sweet and very independent. We want to add another small bird to our flock and we are feeling torn. We are wait listing for an English Budgie, but cockatiels seem so sweet and endearing. I don't know what to do

My issue is cage placement. I have cats and they are way to curious, so Tater has his own room. I feel this is safer, that he is more secure not having to deal with cats eyeing him up for a fit on rye bread I know that budgies tend to be a bit more independent as well, so I think one would be ok with being in the bird room. What about a cockatiel? Is not being near the family, or insight detrimental? I spend a few hours a day in the room with Tater, he is allowed out to sit with me or perch in the window. We also just got a really nice play stand!! Hopefully a Tater will appreciate my efforts at entertaining him.

Your thought, comments and suggestions are most appreciated!!!!

Re: Cockatiel vs Budgie

I have one of each at the moment and have had others in the past. They both have good and bad and its really a matter of taste, though I would guess a budgie is more like a parrotlet though clearly super wimpy in comparison. (I just sort of had to accept that a p'let isn't really the right fit for my flock at the moment.)

Budgies are more feisty and better talkers (though I've never had one that talked) but they are also more resistant to training and can be nippy. All of mine except one English budgie back in the day have been nippers. My current hen Finn is very nippy but we're working on it.

Cockatiels are sweet, especially the females and also very gentle. They are super wimpy though and prone to night frights and other hysteria. They are easier to train, but less acrobatic and interested in doing "tricks." They can talk sometimes, though not very well, but males seem very adept at learning to whistle. I have a Lutino hen who is adorably sweet and its as if she doesn't even know how to bite. She's a big chicken though and afraid of pretty much everything. She's 14, so its not a baby thing. It's just a cockatiel thing, though there are exceptions to every rule.

Thanks for the input Phlox. In your opinion do you think a cockatiel would do ok in a bird room away from the busy part of the house? I fear making a bird depressed or neurotic.
